Behind the Mask

It lives inside your head, unseen,
Battle fought behind the screen.
No age, no race, no creed, no colour,
Mental health can touch us all, one way or another.

We wear a mask and say, “I’m fine,”
While falling apart a little at a time.
We laugh and smile, we play the role,
While silent darkness takes its toll.

You finally speak, you finally cry,
You tell someone you don’t want to die.
Physiatrist“wait six months” is what you’re told,
While desperation takes its hold.

Another prescription, another pill,
But sometimes medication can’t cure the ill.
When you’re standing at the edge of su***de and despair,
What you need most is someone there.

That’s where voluntary groups brightly shine,
With people who say, “Your life matters you’re not alone, you’re mine.”
No judgement, no labels, just someone who cares,
A listening ear when no-one else is there.

So take off the mask, let somebody see,
The person beneath it deserves to be free.
For one voice, one hand, one moment of care
Can give someone hope when there’s nothing but despair.
