Fear doesn't always look or feel like fear.
Perhaps courage doesn't always look or feel like courage either.

Just because we feel fear does not mean we are not also courageous.
When we live with uncertainty, with what we don't know or cannot predict, with loss, change, or experiences that don't make sense, and we continue to show up each day, that is courage.
Sometimes that courage asks a great deal of us. We become so focused on getting through that we lose sight of ourselves, our confidence, our needs, or the things that once brought us joy. Yet we keep going.
That is strength.
Over time, though, the cost of simply enduring can begin to show itself in our mental and emotional wellbeing, our physical health, our relationships, and the way we experience life.

Then a different kind of courage is needed.
The courage to pause and ask difficult questions. The courage to be with what is there….

What is really happening in my life?

What do I need now?

It can feel safer to stay with what we know, even when it no longer helps us live the life we want.
But courage is not only found in enduring. Sometimes courage is found in becoming curious, wanting to understand, taking responsibility for what is ours to hold and what is not, and choosing a way forward that is healthier, kinder, fairer, and more honest, for ourselves and for the people we care about.

🤝 Finding Belonging 🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Many of us long to feel more connected, to ourselves and to others. But when we’ve experienced trauma, showing up as our authentic selves can feel frightening and impossible rather than freeing.

If you’re someone who deeply wants things to be different but feels stuck, it doesn’t mean you’re not trying hard enough. Often, it means your nervous system is doing its best to protect you in the ways it learned to.

The ways we learned to protect ourselves were often necessary. They helped us survive.

Growth and healing are not about forcing ourselves to be different. They are about creating enough safety, self-compassion, and support for change to become possible.

Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s continuing to show up while fear is present.
Therapy offers a space to compassionately make sense of your experiences, reconnect with yourself, and discover that belonging begins not with being perfect, but with being accepted exactly as you are.

Beginning with you 🦋.

In therapy, we don't judge the younger parts of ourselves. We thank them for helping us survive, while gently exploring whether the old rules they learned to live by still fit the lives we want to live today.

Caring for yourself isn't separate from caring for those you love.

When life is challenging or painful, it's easy to focus on what others should do differently. Whether it’s our children, our partners, or even friends, sometimes the bravest question is: What is mine to take responsibility for?

As Vex King says, the weight of other people’s expectations is a burden that was never yours to carry. Most of the judgment we encounter in our lives is not really about you, the person you are or the choices you make, it reflects the stories people tell themselves, the beliefs and perspectives people carry with them, shaped by their own experiences, insecurities, blind spots, and fears.

There’s nothing more freeing than the day you finally accept that you can’t please everyone and, more importantly, that you don’t need to.

You can live in line with your values, and someone will still call you a sellout. You can fulfill all your family’s aspirations for you and still disappoint them. You can genuinely show up for people, and they’ll still talk behind your back.

Regardless, you have to live your truth because it’s yours to live.

Most judgment isn’t really about you; it’s about the lens through which people view the world, shaped by their own experiences, insecurities, and limitations. Once you understand this, you stop taking criticism personally and start seeing it as information about them, not yourself.

The weight of other people’s expectations is a burden you were never meant to carry. You didn’t come into this world to fulfill someone else’s idea of who you should be, what you should achieve, or how you should live. You came to express your unique blend of gifts, perspectives, and experiences in whatever way feels most authentic to you. This doesn’t mean being careless or inconsiderate. It means making choices rooted in wholeness rather than in the wounds that taught you to prioritize other people’s comfort over your own.

A life built on constant pleasing will never feel like your own. And honestly, it’s a life you’ll always fail at, because people will be disappointed either way. You can’t control how they receive you, and you’ll always fall short of ever-changing expectations.

The most courageous thing you can do is disappoint people by being yourself. This may mean some relationships change, some approval fades, and some people drift away. But what you gain is far greater: the peace of being yourself, connections with people who love the real you rather than the version you performed, and you reclaim the energy once wasted on facades. You build the kind of respect that only comes from self-respect. And most of all, you gain a life that feels genuinely yours, even if it’s messy and imperfect.

Don't break a bird's wings and then tell it to fly.
Don't break a heart and then tell it to love.
Don't break a soul and then tell it to be happy.
Don't see the worst in a person and then expect them to see the best in you.
Don't judge people and then expect them to stand by your side.
Don't play with fire and expect to stay safe.

Life is about giving and taking
You cannot give bad and expect to receive good.
You cannot give hate and expect to receive love.

If you wish to see positive change in your life, you must be willing to be the change itself.

When "I'm Fine" means "I Wouldn't Know Where to Begin"

It's Men's Health Week this week, and I've been reflecting on something I often hear.

Sometimes when someone says, "I'm fine," they aren't trying to avoid the conversation. They very likely want to talk with you. At the same time, when it comes to answering that question, they might genuinely not know where to start.

For many people, particularly those who have spent much of their lives carrying responsibility, there hasn't always been much time or opportunity to stop and ask themselves how they're really doing.

When you're busy looking after others, providing for your family, keeping a business going, supporting your partner, caring for children, or parents, or simply doing what needs to be done each day, your own feelings can easily get pushed to one side.
Not because they don't matter, but because there always seems to be something more urgent.

You might notice that you feel tired, but rest is either some way off or it doesn't seem to help. Maybe you feel under pressure, or find yourself becoming irritable, withdrawing from people, working even harder, or simply keeping yourself busy.
And when someone asks how you're doing, the only answer that comes to mind is ….
"I'm fine."

Sometimes the people who find it hardest to talk about what's going on are the people who have spent years being the dependable, strong, coping, or kind one.
Perhaps, over time, it can become difficult to know what to do with all the thoughts, feelings, worries and pressures that have built up along the way.
Not because there is anything wrong with you, or because you’re failing to cope. But because carrying things on your own for a long time can be exhausting.

Perhaps this week offers an opportunity to pause for a moment and wonder …. "How am I really doing?" Not how I should be, not how others need me to be, just how I am.

The Sadnesses Beneath Anger

I came across this photo and wanted to share it today, as I feel anger is so often misunderstood.

Sometimes anger is exactly what we need. It can help us recognise when something matters, when a boundary has been crossed, when something feels unfair, unsafe, or wrong. At times, anger can move us to protect ourselves or others, to speak up, or to create positive change.

At other times, underneath anger there is sadness, grief, hurt, fear ….. the pain of needs that have gone unacknowledged, often for a long time. Anger can grow around older emotional wounds, like an over-protective friend …… “Don’t touch there! It hurts too much”.

Sometimes, we carry shame about our anger, when it feels like it carries meaning about the kind of person we are, or when it impacts the people around us.

I often think of anger as the emotion that cares about us the most, the part of us trying to protect what's important to us. The part that knows something needs attention, care, boundaries, rest, honesty, or healing.

If we can be with our anger with curiosity rather than judgement, openness rather than fear, anger may have something important for us to know about ourselves and what we need to move forwards in the ways we’d choose for ourselves and the ones we care about.

There’s a lot that gets carried on a farm.
Tools, feed bags, paperwork, and worry.
Sometimes it’s the invisible weight that feels the heaviest.

If you’ve been feeling worn out, worried, or stuck in your own head lately, you don’t have to carry it alone.

I’m a counsellor with farming roots, offering confidential support and discounts for farmers, their family members, and those working in the countryside.

In-person and video-call sessions.
No fuss and no judgement.
If you feel that you would like to talk to someone, even if you don't know where to begin, I am here to listen and offer meaningful support.

Feel free to message me, send an email, or give this a share so it reaches someone who might need it.
