At SpaMedica, we are committed to creating a culture that encourages open and honest conversations around wellbeing, including men’s health 💙

Men’s Health Week is a chance to continue those conversations, share experiences, and reflect on the small habits and actions that can support both physical and mental wellbeing.

When we spoke with colleagues, a clear message came through: looking after your health starts with small, consistent steps, and taking time to focus on both physical and mental wellbeing can make a real difference.

A fascinating trip down memory lane at SpaMedica Newark! ✈️📸

One of our patients, Mr Roy, recently shared some incredible stories from his time as a pilot and military veteran. During his service, he flew a variety of aircraft, including the famous Lancaster bomber.

This week, he brought in a collection of photographs to show the team, including an amazing picture from 1963 of an elderly patient being airlifted for cataract surgery. The photo even shows the surgeon getting ready for the operation!

It's remarkable to see how cataract care has evolved over the decades, while the importance of helping people see clearly again has remained the same. ❤️

Today we remember the brave individuals who served and sacrificed on D-Day, 6th June 1944.

82 years on, we honour their courage, resilience and the legacy they left behind. At SpaMedica, we are proud to reflect on this historic moment and pay tribute to the generation who helped shape the freedoms we have today.

Thank you to all who served and to those who continue to carry their stories forward.

With Cataract Awareness Month and the World Cup both taking place in June, teams from SpaMedica and Freedom Vision are bringing football fun to the pitch with a penalty shoot-out and crossbar challenge ⚽

But there’s a twist… participants will be wearing cataract simulator goggles while they take part.

The goggles are designed to show what living with cataracts can be like, including blurred vision and difficulty judging distance. It’s a simple but powerful way to help people understand how cataracts can affect everyday activities and confidence.

As part of Cataract Awareness Month, the challenge is all about starting conversations and helping more people recognise the signs and impact of cataracts.

We’ll be sharing highlights soon 👀 Are you game-ready?

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can be easy to miss at first, especially if your other eye is still seeing well. It’s common to think changes are just part of getting older or needing stronger reading glasses.

But there are some red flags you shouldn’t ignore:
🚩 Straight lines starting to look wavy or distorted
🚩A dark or blurry patch in the centre of your vision
🚩A sudden change in your central vision, especially in one eye

AMD is painless, but it can affect your vision rapidly if left untreated. The good news is that treatment is available - particularly for wet AMD - to help preserve your remaining sight and maintain good quality of life.

Over 5,500 patients across England and Wales trust SpaMedica for their sight-saving injections. Plus, our dedicated Sight Support team is here to make your journey with AMD as smooth and comfortable as possible. You’re not alone in this.

🗨️ "When the war clouds have passed and we worry no more, when the guns cease their fighting and life is less tiring. I'll build a wee house with a garden and a gate, I'll keep this in memory and pray that you'll wait"
Flight Lieutenant LB Silvester (and Ethel Silvester), grandfather of SpaMedica Chief Medical Officer, Alex Silvester, December 1943.

This VE Day, we remember and honour the remarkable courage of those who served during the Second World War. 🌹

Across SpaMedica, teams are taking time to reflect on the sacrifices made by a generation who gave so much. As part of our commemorations, colleagues will observe a two-minute reflection to remember those who fought for our freedom and to honour the Second World War generation across the UK and Commonwealth.

If you have a VE Day story or memory to share, we’d love to hear it in the comments 👇
