We heard the lingo of labelling generations, and then it went quiet. A bit too quiet. Does that mean we are still millenials or is something else emerging.

The thing is, language evolves, just like the world we live in. You won't know everything, and that's okay. It's not about being up to date with it all.

Its about figuring out where you fit into the new world? Recognising the shift in balance and how to make sure the scales are staying balanced.

I hope you enjoy this read. I'd love to know your thoughts about this topic.

At Holistic Talking Therapy, support is offered to teenagers aged between 13-17years old.

The support is there to help teenagers manage:
- overwhelm,
- anxiety & stress,
- friendship breakdown,
- difficulties maintaining friendships,
- bereavement support (coping with loss)
- school avoidance
- managing dysregulation.

If you are a parent and you are noticing your teenager struggling, please reach out. All sessions are tailored per individual need, and will follow the young person's pace.

Adults:
The transition to adulthood from teenage years is a tricky road to navigate. High stress from exams, university and career planning. New friendships form and sometimes you might feel lonely when your plans do not go the way you had thought.
Relationship struggles, identity crisis and anxiety can all lead to low self esteem / low mood state.

You might feel disconnected from the world, and those around you, it can make you feel lost, and isolated from others as though no-one will understand what you are going through.

Burnout is quite common during high stress periods especially when it is prolonged without support. Finding that balance in your life to prioritise tasks is important here.

Did you know that I also support OCD, fears and phobias, depression and anxiety creating a treatment plan tailor made just for you.

Here's the thing, whether you are a teenager reading this post, a parent concerned about their child, or an adult trying to figure things out.

Therapy isn't about fixing you, it's about expanding your awareness of what is happening in your life and around you.

Together I can support you to manage the presenting issue. The biggest wins are the small steps you take, it's about learning to walk before you can run.

Finding balance in your life to be able to recognise what should take priority and what can be dealt with later.

I recognise that costs can be a barrier to accessing therapy, and will always be transparent about my approach with this. We can look at ways that might be more affordable for you and less stressful.

Thanks for reading.

Different generations, the same struggles.

Our grandparents and even going back to their parents grew up without much understanding or knowledge about mental health.

Depression was seen as a clinical illness that brought shame to the family. Anxiety was unheard of. Sadness was seen as vulnerability and needed to be concealed. Men were the providers, so they needed to be brave, showing no sign of internal struggles. A soft heart they would have, but never for anyone to see.

The silent struggles of women carried on through the generations, work away in the house, be everything to everyone and it will work itself out. Speaking out would be seen as complaining, ungrateful, shameful even. "It's better to stay quiet."

Everyone struggled, but no-one was brave enough to break out of the social conditions.

Through the generations til this present day, we are still trying to survive the battles our parents weren't taught to name. Hearts softened but lack of understanding remained.

Here's the thing:
You can respect your elders AND acknowledge your emotions.
You can love your family AND still set boundaries.
You can have faith AND still need therapy.

Breaking generational silence doesn’t mean blaming them—
it means choosing healing where they couldn’t.

❤️ 💚

The Cycle of Anxiety

Anxiety is a series of anxious thoughts that impacts emotions, causes physical symptoms and effects behaviour.

When we talk about the cycle of Anxiety, we can see that:

1. Fear of Stimulus is referring to an event or a trigger that has taken place. This can be a situation that was negative, disliked, a threat, or misinterpreted as negative.

2. Misinterpretation of Threat:
Thoughts are automatic occurring, this means that we cannot control what we think, but we can manage which thoughts we choose to believe. In the phase of misinterpreting a threat, we believe that the event is dangerous.

3. Anxiety:
In this phase, the individual will display physical symptoms of anxiety such as a racing heart, sweating profusely, a fast heartbeat, an increase in the pace of breathing. Here the individual recognises that something is wrong.

4. Safety Seeking Behaviours:
When we feel anxious, the most common behaviour is to seek reassurance from those we trust. To tell us that things are going to be fine, to advise us to keep going, or to try XYZ as it worked for them. You work hard to avoid the problem and it can lead to ruminating over the event itself and the symptoms.

5. Reinforced Pattern/ Absence of Correctivr Experience:
When we keep seeking safety Behaviours if reassurance, and avoidance you might feel fine for a while. Until another event or trigger occurs and you get stuck in a repeated cycle anxious thoughts, overwhelm, physical symptoms, and more avoidance. This is because you haven't learnt to break down your thoughts cycle, to challenge the evidence behind the bias thoughts, or to understand how to manage the problem.

6. BREAK THE CYCLE
To break the cycle of anxiety, you need to step away from avoidance, and reassurance. Break down the symptoms you feel, write it down if it helps. Understand your behaviours. Only then can you challenge the thoughts using evidence based questioning.
