✈️ Travelling Abroad with a Baby Who’s Weaning? Here’s What to Know! 🥣☀️
A little planning goes a long way when travelling with a weaning baby. Here are my top tips to help make mealtimes stress-free while you’re away:
🧳 Pack the essentials – Bring bibs, spoons, snacks, a few familiar foods for the journey, wipes and anything else you know your little one loves.
🥣 Stick to familiar foods – Holidays aren’t the ideal time to introduce new allergens. Keep offering foods your baby has already tried and tolerated.
🍌 Choose simple, familiar foods that are easy to find – Fruit, avocado, plain yoghurt, eggs, pasta, rice, potatoes and vegetables are all great options in most destinations.
👨🍳 Don’t be afraid to ask – If you’re staying in a hotel, especially a family-friendly one, ask if the chef can prepare something simple for your baby. Many are happy to help with plain pasta, vegetables, potatoes, fruit or other baby-friendly options.
🍅 Go easy on sauces – For babies under 1, try to avoid foods covered in sauces where possible, as many contain added salt and sugar. Plain is often the best choice!
🍯 Remember: no honey under 1 – Honey isn’t safe for babies under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism, even if it’s cooked or added to foods.
💧 Think about the water – If you’re visiting a country where the tap water isn’t safe to drink, use sealed bottled water for drinking and preparing formula. Choose bottled water that’s low in sodium (less than 200mg/L) and sulphate (less than 250mg/L), or follow local health advice.
🦠 Food safety first – Choose freshly cooked food that’s served hot, make sure chilled foods have been stored correctly, and avoid buffet food that’s been sitting out for long periods, especially in hot weather.
🪑 Be flexible – Routines might change on holiday, and that’s okay. Some days your little one might eat more, other days less—and that’s completely normal.
✈️ Pack travel-friendly snacks – Rice cakes, oat bars (age-appropriate), fruit pouches and other familiar snacks can be a lifesaver during long journeys or delays.
