The older we get, the more reason there is to think about footwear. As we advance in age, our feet change shape. They can broaden and we can develop lumps and lesions we didn't previously have.
A good pair of shoes holds the foot in place with decent support and should be made of a good quality leather or breathable material. Trainers can be great but care should be taken to check they have a wide and deep toe box to give toes plenty of room.
When we buy shoes we should make sure they have a cushioned insole to absorb shock, and preferably have a lace, strap or velcro to keep our foot in place.
Slippers are as important as shoes as we probably spend more time in them than shoes. A high percentage of falls can be attributed to "sloppy slippers", therefore it is important to invest in a pair of comfortable but supportive slippers.

Chilblains (Perniosis) are inflamed small blood vessels caused by an abnormal reaction to damp cold conditions, especially in people with poor circulation and with poor mobility. This causes patches on hands and feet that can look mottled with bluish/red discolouration which usually itch/burn/sting and can be very painful.
Chilblain sufferers should always try to prevent them where possible before the cold weather sets in, but if you already have them it is worth treating them with chilblain ointment. Prevention starts with keeping the whole body warm, both at home and outside.

Thank you to all our lovely customers who bought raffle tickets during November. The prize was a free treatment at the clinic. One of our patients, Miss Smith, drew out the name of the winner, who has kindly donated the treatment cost to the charity, meaning we raised a total of £222 for the NSPCC.

Cheers to 10 years!! 🤩🥳 Pen Street Foot Clinic is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this month! We would like to say a massive thank you to all our clients over the years. I would also like to say a massive thank you to our receptionist Sharon for keeping the clinic running efficiently year after year.
This month we are supporting Beth running the London Marathon for the NSPCC so for the bargain price of a 50p raffle ticket, patients can win a free treatment. 😁😁

Following the guidance from our professional body, the Royal College of Podiatry, we are continuing to follow strict safety guidelines to minimise the risk of Covid-19 infection. We are therefore requesting all clients to still wear a face covering, except where they are exempt. Staff will also continue to wear masks. We also ask clients to continue with social distancing.
The QR code will still be available to scan if clients wish to use it.
Due to the rising cases of Covid-19 at this time, we will keep these protocols in place for the foreseeable future in order to keep both clients and staff safe.
Thank you for your understanding.

We've been seeing an awful lot of chilblains and cold feet in the clinic recently.
Chilblains are a form of vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) which affect the extremities (hands, feet ears etc).
Chilblains occur when the area is exposed to cold. When exposed to cold the blood vessels vasoconstrict (narrow), which is a normal response to cold temperatures. The blood vessels narrow so that blood can be redirected from the extremities to the internal organs so that the body's core temperature can be maintained.
After being exposed to cold, if the area is then exposed to heat the blood vessels will expand, however they expand too rapidly, damaging the capillaries (vasculitis). The result is that the blood then leaks out and into the tissues causing inflammation (redness and swelling); this is known as a chilblain. This affects people who have an abnormal response to the cold.
Treatments we can provide are creams for warming the feet, insoles for thermal insulation and advice for prevention.

Following last nights Government announcement that England is again in lockdown, we will be remaining open and delivering treatments following the College of Podiatry's guidleines.
We will maintain our strict infection control standards and everyone will be contacted the day before their treatment to be triaged in case of symptoms.
We understand if clients feel they may need to rearrange their appointments due to shielding or after vaccinations but please know we are following every procedure to make the clinic as safe as possible. We still only allow one client into the building at any time. Reception staff are masked and screened and I am wearing full PPE at all times. The reception area and treatment room is cleaned between every patient and we allow extra time for this. Clients are asked to have their temperatures taken on arrival and anyone with an abnormal temperature will be asked to wait for a few minutes before having it redone. If the temperature is still abnormal, they will not be offered treatment at this time. All patients are required to wear a mask if they are not exempt. We ask all clients to use hand sanitiser on arrival.
Hopefully we can all be back to normal in the coming months but at the moment we ask everyone to keep safe.
