It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing that MHS Massage Therapy is closing. Therefore, I will no longer be offering massage therapy treatments.
It has been an extremely difficult decision as I love being a massage therapist, but it hasn't worked out for me as a business.
I am very grateful to my clients, family and friends who have given me so much support - you have all been amazing.
Life is an adventure - who knows what I will do next?!
With all best wishes, Marie

From the land of ABBA, flat-pack furniture and Volvo comes this popular style of massage. It was developed by Pehr Henrik Ling who pioneered the teaching of physical education in Sweden in the early nineteenth century. His knowledge of anatomy, physiology and gymnastics led him to develop this specific style of physical therapy. It is one of the most widely used forms of massage in the western world today.

The movements of Swedish massage include whole hand sweeps (palms down), thumb rotaries and 'kneading' using the fingers and palms. By working on soft tissue, Swedish massage restores a sense of balance, calm and wellbeing. It also improves circulation.

I use Swedish massage as the basis of most of my massages. It allows me to identify areas of tension and specifically 'knots.' Due to the variety of movements incorporated into this form of massage, it can provide both texture and depth.

Imagine yourself relaxing on a Hawaiin sun-drenched beach lapping up the soothing sounds of the ocean waves - this is the home of Lomi Lomi massage. It is a unique form of massage derived from the ancient Polynesians and more specifically, the master healers of Hawaii. Lomi in Hawaiin, means 'to rub' (or knead). The word is used twice to create emphasis.

The forearms and elbows are used to create long, flowing strokes. The seamless strokes mimic the action of the waves, thus creating a feeling of inner peace and wellbeing.

Lomi Lomi is a magical mix of smooth and firm strokes. So for those who prefer a deep tissue massage, this technique is the perfect choice. Its effects are even better when combined with hot stones (in lieu of the warmth of the Hawaiin sun).

The benefits of Lomi Lomi massage are many:
Relieves physical and mental tension.
Induces deep relaxation.
Promotes restful sleep.
Improves circulation and lymphatic flow.
Restores balance and harmony.

The name Indian Head is somewhat misleading as this style of massage normally includes the shoulders, scalp neck and face.

As the name suggests, it's a massage technique that originated in India. It has been practiced there since around 600 BC. This treatment focuses on massaging acupressure points.

Traditionally, the person receiving an Indian Head Massage (IHM) would be seated and clothed (done without oils). Seated IHM is now popular in the corporate world. Businesses that have introduced worker-wellbeing programmes often offer this practical style of massage to their staff.

To promote complete relaxation, holistic therapists usually carry out IHM as a couch treatment using oils.

The benefits of IHM:
Helps alleviate headaches and sinus problems.
Relieves physical and mental tension.
Induces deep relaxation.
Promotes restful sleep.
Improves circulation and lymphatic flow.

Do you need some inspiration? Wise Words can be found on my social media pages. My pages are all about information and inspiration. They include small feature articles, facts about my business and quotes I like.

My new motto is, 'Have a Go.' Before starting my business I knew virtually nothing about branding, advertising, marketing and managing social media content. But I was determined to learn these new skills.

They say, 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks.' Well, if this oldie (I'm fifty eight) can learn new tricks, then anyone can.

So if you are thinking of trying something new, give it a go, you never know where it will take you. Plus, you might have fun doing it anyway.

My name is Marie, I'm the owner/massage therapist at MHS Massage Therapy.

Recently, I was luckily enough to be able to recite a poem of mine on Romesh Ranganathan's Saturday show on BBC Radio 2 (3rd August). As the episode is soon to disappear from BBC Sounds, I have decided to share my poem with you here:

When my body feels like it’s weighed down by cement.

When I’m feeling drained,

And every sinew is strained.

What makes me light is a massage therapy treatment.

It frees my mind, body and soul.

I can slumber,

Whilst the therapist works on my lumber (region).

Total relaxation is the goal.

Those pesky knots are smoothed away.

When pain and tension nags at me,

With a handful of strokes, I am set free.

Once again, ready to seize another day.

Nothing is rushed, the therapist takes it slow.

My body does so much for me.

I have to look after it, that I can see.

Massage therapy allows me, to just let go.

The specialised oval and round stones I use are made from volcanic rock (balsalt). This type of rock holds heat extremely well. The stones are placed in a purpose-made water heater. Once they reach a temperature of about 50 degrees centigrade, they are massage-ready. I will firstly smooth oil over the part of the body that is going to be massaged and add a small amount of oil to the stones. The oil helps the stones glide across the body. All parts of the stone are used for massage, the flat, heel, side and tip. The warmth of the stones dilate the blood vessels and loosen the muscles. The combined pressure of the hands and stones moving over the body offers a deeper treatment.

The combination of heat and massage can:
Relieve physical and mental tension.
Reduce pain and inflammation.
Induce deep relaxation.
Promote restful sleep.
Improve circulation and lymphatic flow.
Increase flexibility.

The earliest use of hot stones to improve general health and wellbeing began in India over five thousand years ago. Many other cultures have since adopted the practice. The reason Hot Stone Massage is still around, is because it works.
