I have been so lucky to work with so many legends over the last 9 years gaining invaluable knowledge and experience, from being the sports therapist at the Vans World Skateboard Championships to working with the WSL at the Pro France.

I am super grateful for the experiences I have gained and the amazing places I have worked around the world. Now I am excited for the next chapter of working locally within the community. Im stoked to be working with local athletes, surfers, BJJ enthusiasts, skaters and anyone who is interested in helping their body feel better, improve recovery and help prevent injury.

If you have any pain, are looking to improve the recovery of an injury or looking to restore some balance to your body please feel free to hit me up. My aim is to help you feel better, move better and hopefully even learn a thing or two about your body!

Drop me a message to book an appointment any time. All sessions are for the hour and only £40 until the end of the year.

Next week availability if you’d like to book in. Just had a cancellation actually so also have Monday at 11am

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an inflammatory arthritis that primarily effects the spine causing chromic pain and stiffness. Usually it will first develop in the sacroiliac (SI) joints and can later affect other parts of the spine, potentially causing vertebra fusion. It also effects other body parts and joints. For example eye sight can be effected with blurred vision and light sensitivity, as well as psoriasis / flakey skin, digestive issues and even the heart can be effected.

The main symptom is chronic back pain and stiffness. The bodies immune system usually creates an inflammatory response to injury or illness, however AS targets an inflammatory response in healthy body parts, like the SI joints and spine.

I was diagnosed when I was 15, back in 1993. Not much was known about AS then. For me the idea of AS was first entertained due to the inclusion of a protein called HLA-B27 in my blood. This protein marker is a good indicator of AS, but having this protein in your blood doesn’t mean you definitely have AS.

Treatment has moved forward a lot in the last the years, mostly through pharma drugs. However the best thing there a AS sufferer can do is keep moving (exercise) and eat a good diet (which is never easy when you are in chronic pain).

The pain never really goes away, you just learn to live with it as you move through good days and bad days. Then there are the flare ups which can hit you at any given time, and they really suck! Flare up can last weeks or months and differ in severity.

Any way, hopefully you’ve learnt something here. You can’t see an autoimmune condition in people but it doesn’t mean they aren’t suffering.

Research in the USA with 235 AS patients showed that 63% of them had difficulty spending time with friends, 54% experienced a lack of understanding from friends and family and 47% had difficulty spending time with family.

I haven’t posted a great deal recently through this channel as I haven’t been training or following a consistent regime / program. I’d feel hypocritical to post exercise / health info when i’m not practising what I preach.

So this is me now after a couple months of cutting myself some slack, not training and eating what I like (god it’s been fun). So this week I’ve motivated myself to make good decisions and live better habits. Eat better and get myself back into a conducive training program. So why the break? Well this year has been a hard one which has compromised both my physical and mental health (much like a lot of us) and I just felt the best thing was to stand back, eat as much chocolate as I wanted and give my body some time to recover (outside of surfing and skating).

FYI, this is not a post looking for sympathy, or to check if I’m ‘OK’. I’m fine. It’s simply being transparent with myself and a step of acceptance of where I have been.

Firstly, I am not a victim. Everything that has happened and continues to happen is always my own responsibility. Secondly, what am I doing to take responsibility for myself?

So as much as you may agree that it’s Ok not be Ok, I refuse to use this mindset to make excuses, justify or take comfort in these types of ‘sayings’ and ‘hashtags’. Making excuses to simply except poor physical and mental health is not taking responsibility. I owe myself more and I deserve more from myself.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s great to see so much more awareness to both mental and physical health in our society, especially in these crazy times, but we have to be careful not to desensitise and saturate our minds to think it’s acceptable to live this way. Nobody can change yesterday and nobody can guarantee tomorrow. So instead focus on the now.

We are all individuals and we all have our own journeys, no journey is the same and we undertake many in a lifetime.

This is my journey right now, to forgive myself, to apologise to myself, to love myself and to be thankful to myself! In this I hope to share the same sentiments with others.

I am looking forward to training and posting more content again, one day at a time 🤙🏼

Using Rocktape UK to help manage some muscular discomfort. We all know that feeling of an angry muscle in our back after sleeping in a weird position, it’s irritating and exhausting nothing really seems to help...... well this certainly does.

The first strip of tape runs alongside the spine. First we get some stretch through the tissue by creating flexion through the spine (concentrating on the thoracic region), adding a bit of ‘cow’ stretch facilitates this further. The tape is then applied top to bottom with around 20-30% stretch.

Now here is the magic, the cross sectional piece of tape is placed in line with the point of pain. But before we do this we put friction on the tissue pulling it one side or the other. Test both sides and see which has the more positive effect or release on the pain. Usually, from experience we find it’s pulling away from the spine. So with one hand (you Kay find it easier to ask the patient for assistance here if required) we pull the skin / tissue to the right. We then use the cross sectional tape to hold the skin there. Apply from left to right, with around 40-50% stretch. This will hopefully hold the tissue with that pulling effect.

From a sensory perspective this changes the input from the area, potentially confusing the brain. The receptors have moved or manipulated to receive a slightly different input, hopefully helping to change the ‘habit’ or the information communication to our brain. As the pain is generated in the brain confusing the input of info can possibly have an effect in how this info is perceived and processed.

Always talk with the patient as we need to also be aware that this could further irritate the area. So test and retest and double check after 10-15 mins to see how it feels. Thankfully in this case it was a success.

You are able to see the decompression of the tissue as well as the spiral lines the tissue follows. The waves seen through the tissue here is simply the lifting effect caused by the tape.

Give it a go, experiment and play around with directions in which the tissue pull is applied. We are all different, so we need an individual approach.

When I was born 43 years ago the first thing my father did was lift me up and say future England rugby number 8. Well although I made North of England U21 squad I never got to play as I blew my shoulder out and ended my rugby career!

Instead I took up surfing, which has proved to be one of the best decisions of my life (funny how things work out).

But no matter what decisions I’ve made, the passions I’ve follow or jobs that I’ve done, my Father has always been there for me no matter if he agreed or not. He would always offer his opinion or advice, but ultimately support me in what I chose to do.

My father is my Hero. So it might not be an England Rugby cap or a number 8 shirt. But I was so honoured to offer him the British Surfing uniform that I received when working with the team last month. Even more stoked that everyone thinks he’s an old school surfer now when he wear it!

My Dad doesn’t do social media and that makes me envious! I don’t get to see my Dad as often as I’d like and if there were more people like him in the world it would be a better place!

Love you Dad X
