Tomorrow we warmly welcome you to Sakya Thubten Ling’s Annual Refuge Ceremony, a precious opportunity to formally take Refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha.

If you have been exploring the spiritual path, seeking greater peace, wisdom and compassion, this may be the moment to take the next step.

In Buddhism, we do not seek to convert others. The Buddha encouraged each person to investigate his teachings for themselves with wisdom and discernment. It is often said that when the causes and conditions are right, we naturally encounter the Dharma. If this invitation has reached you, you are welcome to reflect on whether it resonates with your heart.

Taking Refuge marks the beginning of the Buddhist path. It is not a binding commitment but a sincere intention to cultivate wisdom, compassion and ethical living. The Buddha always encouraged freedom of inquiry, never blind belief.

About our tradition

Sakya Thubten Ling follows the Sakya tradition, one of the four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism, alongside the Nyingma, Kagyu and Gelug traditions. The principal teaching of the Sakya school is Lamdre (“The Path and Its Fruit”), a profound system showing how the path itself leads to the complete realisation of enlightenment.

The Refuge Ceremony is free to attend, although offerings are gratefully accepted to help support the Dharma and our centre.

If you would like to continue your journey, we also invite you to attend our Green Tara Initiation on Sunday. Taking Refuge is the prerequisite for receiving this empowerment.

Green Tara is one of the most beloved enlightened figures in Tibetan Buddhism. She embodies enlightened compassion in swift action, helping practitioners overcome obstacles, fears and difficulties while nurturing courage, wisdom and compassion. We also hold regular Green Tara practice sessions at the centre for anyone wishing to deepen their connection with this beautiful practice.

About Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey

The Refuge Ceremony and Green Tara Initiation will be bestowed by Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey, a highly respected teacher of the Sakya tradition. After many years of intensive study at the Sakya monastic university, he was awarded the title of Khenpo, recognising his profound scholarship and ability to teach the Buddha’s wisdom.

Khenpo Lekshey previously served as Director of the principal Sakya Centre in India and is a close disciple of His Holiness the 41st Sakya Trizin, one of the foremost lineage holders of Tibetan Buddhism.

Whether you are simply curious or feel called to begin the Buddhist path, you are most welcome.

Who is Green Tara? 💚

Green Tara is one of the most beloved female Buddhas in Tibetan Buddhism and is known as the embodiment of enlightened compassion in action. She is called the "Swift Liberator" because she responds quickly to the sincere prayers of those who call upon her. Her right leg is extended, symbolising her readiness to rise immediately to help all beings.

For centuries, practitioners have turned to Green Tara for protection from fear, the removal of obstacles, guidance through difficult times, and support on the path to awakening. Her practice is associated with developing courage, wisdom, compassion and the inner confidence to face life's challenges with a calm and open heart.

Receiving a Green Tara Empowerment (Jenang) is a precious opportunity. It establishes a connection with Green Tara's enlightened qualities and authorises you to engage in her traditional meditation practice and mantra within an authentic lineage. For many practitioners, it becomes the beginning of a lifelong relationship with one of Buddhism's most compassionate and accessible deities.

Her mantra is:

Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha

We are delighted to welcome one of our founding lamas, Khenpo Jamyang Lekshey, from Sakya Centre in Dehradun, India, who will be bestowing the Green Tara Empowerment on Sunday 26th July 2026 from 2:00pm to 3:30pm at Sakya Thubten Ling Buddhist Centre in Bournemouth.

Whether you're completely new to Buddhism or already have an established practice, everyone is warmly welcome.

Book your place here:

May Green Tara's blessings remove obstacles from your path and bring courage, wisdom and compassion to your life.
