As we celebrate Carers week our management team and residents have been taking the time to thank and recognise the hard work all of the staff at Handsworth do every single day.

Carers week traditionally celebrates the roles of those working directly in care but here at Handsworth we recognise that all roles within the home are important in ensuring the warm, caring and supportive environment for all of our residents that call Handsworth home.
Throughout the week staff have enjoyed treats and surprises, such as crumpets for breakfast, lunch or supper, deliveries of pizzas for night staff along with our day staff receiving food deliveries next week. Cans of pop and crisps have also been left for the staff to enjoy along with a thank you gift bag as a token of appreciation for all the hard work.

Our residents also took the time to get crafty making our staff cards to say thank you for everything they do.

Thank you all for the kindness, compassion and dedication you show every single day. The support you give to both our residents and their relatives does not go unnoticed.
Your warmth, teamwork and commitment you bring each day is what makes Handsworth such a special place and we hope you take a moment this week to recognise just how valued you are and how incredibly proud we are to work alongside such a caring and dedicated team.
Handsworth would not be the home it is without you.

Here at Handsworth we would like to say a massive thank you to the team from Lockton who joined us today for their employees volunteer day.

Despite the awful weather throughout the day the team carried out their tasks such as uplifting our benches with positivity and enthusiasm. All those involved worked incredibly hard to ensure our outdoor area is a tidy and enjoyable environment for our residents over the summer months.

We would also like to thank you for the time you took to chat with some of our residents, who braved the elements to see the work being carried out.

We are grateful for supporting Handsworth and for not letting the weather dampen your spirits.

We would also like to thank our kitchen team for preparing a lovely colourful buffet for the Lockton team to enjoy.

What wonderful Pasta-pieces!

This afternoon to mark National Fish and Chip day we carried out a fun and imaginative art session with our volunteer Katarina. We used a variety of dried pasta shapes to bring to life our fish pictures. Each resident brought their own individual ideas to life with some choosing to add the pasta for definition to others making their artwork 3d.
Once their pictures were complete we took time to paint our 'pasta-pieces' with bright acrylic paints.

The activity sparked conversations about fish and chips suppers with everyone discussing their go to order.

It was amazing to see so much creativity and the individuality of each resident. Well done to all our artists for their fishy creations.

🎨🎢 Intergenerational connections in action 🎢🎨

Here at Handsworth we believe there is something truely magical about bringing different generations together.
This week we have welcomed our friends from Hale Day Nursery to join us in creating some lovely bright picture using different fruit and veg. It was lovely to see the creative ideas and laughter between the children and residents.

This was followed by our weekly session of Songs & Smiles, where music is used to bring the generations together. With sensory props such as scarves and familiar songs this is an opportunity to bring everyone together for a fun and engaging session.

Intergenerational sessions are beneficial to all who take part. They help to build confidence and encourage communication along with encouraging reminiscence and friendships across generations.

We are already looking forward to our next visits πŸ’›

Today we have celebrated National Limerick Day with a creative writing afternoon which has caused lots of laughs and silliness.
Using some helpful sheets residents set to work creating their own limerick from cheeky tongue in cheek to funny it's been a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all who took part.

Here at Handsworth we have spent the afternoon proudly celebrating V.E. Day. with a day of reflection, reminiscing and community spirit.
We started our celebrations yesterday where residents spent time creating jam oat squares using a war time recipe, the delicious treats were enjoyed as part of our afternoon reminiscent activity.
This morning we enjoyed a joyful sing a long filled with classic war time songs and cherished memories.
Our sing a long was followed by a delicious wartime inspired buffet lunch which had been prepared by our kitchen team with favourites such as beef paste sandwiches and scotch eggs followed by scones with jam and clotted cream.
We were then delighted to welcome a number of year 6 children from Altrincham Preparatory School who spent time with our residents as they recalled their memories and first-hand experiences of the war and V.E. Day. It was lovely to see the interaction between young and old as residents spoke about the replica items on display and their feelings during the war. It was the perfect opportunity for the children to ask valuable questions which will help towards their upcoming V.E. Day production - which we have been kindly invited to attend.
The children also got to read first hand experiences of one of our residents who has recently had her war time memoirs made into book form, giving a different perspective and the troubles she faced as a child in Italy during the war.
It has been a truly lovely day of celebration with so many meaningful moments for our residents.

To celebrate the Mexican festival Cinco de Mayo yesterday residents enjoyed a Mexican themed day.
We got creative in the morning making our own colourful sombreros using paper plates and bowls along with creating our own maracas. There was lots of laughter and smiles throughout.
We continued the celebrations in the afternoon with a relaxing arm chair travel to Mexico, exploring the sights, culture and traditions. During their trip residents had the chance to sample Mexican food and drink including churros with chocolate dipping sauce and a tequila sunrise cocktail.
To finish off the day, our wonderful kitchen staff prepared a Mexican feast of chilli and nachos which was enjoyed by all.
It was a lovely way to spark conversations and reminiscence πŸ‡²πŸ‡½πŸͺ‡

Handsworth would like to say a big well done to our lovely domestic Nic who was chosen by the beautiful Irene as the winner of our afternoon tea hamper. Thank you to all who entered the competition and all money raised will be added to the residents funds, which is a valuable part of ensuring we can carry out meaningful and engaging activities.
Well done Nic, we hope you enjoy the treats β˜•οΈπŸ°

Everyone here at Handsworth would like to say a huge thank you to Pauline the community champion at Asda in Broadheath, who has kindly donated potting plants and seeds for our residents to add to our garden space, as part of their community champion campaign.

I had the pleasure of meeting Pauline yesterday to collect the donations, and putting a face to a name after sharing emails for some time.

Thanks to your kindness our residents have the opportunity to start growing their own fruit and vegetables and spending more time in our garden. The potting plants will bring colour to our garden when they are planted at our upcoming relatives volunteer day.

Building strong connections with the community offers experiences for our residents and strengthens the gap between generations. Thank you for your generous donations and we look forward to our connection with Asda continuing and growing 🌱🌷
