10-15% of mums experience postnatal depression in the UK. And it doesn’t look the same for everyone.
It can look like:
• constant irritability and rage about things you never felt angry about before
• anxiety that never stops. Obsessively worrying.
• feeling so numb, like you’re on autopilot
• brain fog you just can’t shake - forgetting simple things or forgetting what you were just saying.
• crushing guilt and self doubt. Feeling like your baby deserves better.
• when you might finally get chance to sleep, your brain won’t let you.
• withdrawing from loved ones.

You don’t have to carry on living like that. This post is intended to inform, not diagnose. If this sounds like something you are going through, support is out there.

What a lovely morning!

I just wanted to say a big thank you to those who came along to my first Coffee, Cake & Conversations morning.

I was so glad to create somewhere where parents could come together, have a drink, some cake and just have a chat about the realities of parenting.

It was so insightful hearing everyone’s experiences and having some open and honest conversations, which reminded me just how valuable it is to have a space where we can talk, listen and realise we’re not alone in how we’re feeling.

So… I’ve decided to do another one!

More details coming soon 😊

For September, my “Spotlight on…” series is looking at the difference between baby blues and postnatal depression. There’s also some info about knowing when it might be time to reach out for more support.

Baby blues are common after having a baby and can leave you feeling tearful, emotional, overwhelmed or anxious. For many, these feelings ease within the first couple of weeks.

However, postnatal depression (PND) can be more persistent and have a bigger impact on everyday life. If you’re struggling to cope, feeling low or anxious most of the time or your feelings aren’t improving, please reach out to your midwife, health visitor or GP.

PND is very common and you don’t have to struggle on your own. Seeking support is the first step to feeling like yourself again.

One area of counselling I feel particularly passionate about is supporting parents of children with SEND.

There is constant and never ending focus on getting the right support for children. Appointments, school, EHCPs, researching, advocating, planning, anticipating and constantly trying to ensure they are understood and supported.

Parenting children with SEND can carry an enormity of emotional load. Exhaustion, guilt, worry, grief, frustration, isolation, uncertainty about the future.

Counselling can offer a space where you can be heard without judgement, somewhere that you can let go of the emotional load and make sense of what you’re experiencing. I offer dedicated support for parents of children with SEND, there’s more info about it below:

Finding the right counsellor isn’t about settling, it’s about feeling safe, heard and respected. Therapy is an investment in yourself.

It’s okay to ask questions.
It’s okay to take your time.
It’s okay to choose someone who feels right for you.

Many counsellors offer introductory calls so you can choose someone you feel comfortable with.

Good morning!

To mark the start of my new chapter at Brackley Wellbeing Centre Ltd, I’m hosting a relaxed morning of coffee, cake and conversation for parents and expectant parents. This will be on Wednesday 9th September at 09:30am. We are opposite the town park so perfect to come along, have a chat and then head to the park for a play with your children.

Our first conversation will be around The Mental Load of Parenthood - the thinking, planning and remembering that keeps family life going. And because who hasn’t felt like there are 47 tabs open in their head?!

There’s no pressure to share or any expectations. Just time for a cuppa, cake and a chance to pause and meet other parents.

It’s completely free, but places are limited.
