A little true story about a real life moment where my reaction and response could have taken me on a very different journey.
The work I do as a doctoral trainee health psychologist is relentless. It poses more challenges in my day to day life than seems possible. The challenges seem disproportionate to the successes experienced (which are relatively non-existent on a daily, weekly, monthly basis š¤£).
Losing my work (and potentially my mind), became a teachable moment, one which I would love to share.
I lost my work. I could physically and mentally feel the processing taking place. I rummaged through my mental tool box and
I chose to:
ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy)
I chose to:
breathe.
I videoed this clip for my own self reflection and when I watched it back I could see how I could map the ACT process to it!
So what was happeningā¦
Acceptance (like an acknowledgment): I made room for the disappointment and tears.
Cognitive defusion: My mind said, āyouāre an absolute idiotā, āexcel is š©ā, ānothing worksā, āall that time lostā, āyou canāt remember what you wroteā, āthis why dyslexic people like you shouldnāt be studying at this level, you can barely read, writeā¦or save a documentā.
I noticed that story...remembering pesent moment: One breath...
Self-as-context: Implicitly observing my thoughts rather than becoming them.
Recalling my WHY, my Values: My values havenāt changed.
Committed action: I go again. One word, one paragraph, one document... each time a step forward.
Right now, my step forward is a step outside. The walk, the fresh air is the restoration I need to expand my capacity. Which I need a lot of š¤£
