Dermoscopic clues 🔎

Light-yellow circles = sebum content in sebaceous globules, shaped in a bunch of grapes.

Crown Vessels = branched or arbourising fine blood vessels converging yet sparing the central point

Central punctum = Holocrine secretion of sebum causes collapse of structure and leaves out a central hollow

Goltz syndrome aka Focal Dermal Hypoplasia is an XLD disorder, fatal in male foetus. Look out for linear Blaschko skin atrophy, fatal in herniation and clusters of warts. These may appear condylomatous but HPV is not involved (hence papillomatous). Other features include claw hand deformity, coloboma and striated skeletal dysplasia.

Sebum, an oil mixture released from sebaceous glands. It has two man functions, first forming a water resistant barrier and second controlling harmful bacterial growth. Dysregulated sebum secretion significantly impacts an individual’s quality of life and psychological welfare.

Such action strips off cement that reserves skin barrier and water retention, triggering compensatory and over-production of sebum.
