Walking is one of the simplest ways to keep the body moving, but adding music can make it feel easier and more enjoyable. Creating a 45 minute ( or less ) walking playlist with upbeat songs between 120-130 BPM can keep you at a steady pace from the start to the finish.

Think: one step per beat.

You can vary the pace by changing the BPM, up or down.

Your brain loves rhythm, naturally syncs to it. Its way your foot starts tapping when a good song comes on. You may notice that your steps begin to match the rhythm without consciously trying. Your arms may swing more freely, your stride can feel more even and the whole body may begin to move with less stiffness. Walking even 10-15 minutes can be a useful way to break up a day spent sitting, working at a desk or looking down at your phone.

A very simple trick that hopefully will make your walking feel easier and when it feels easier you are more likely to keep it up. The music will hopefully feel less like exercise and more like time for yourself.
Osteopathy may help with some types of musculoskeletal pain and stiffness, alongside practical advice about movement and daily habits.

With temperatures so high at the moment, it's a good reminder that our bodies often cope better when we look after the basics.

Hydration is one of those simple things that can easily be overlooked, especially when we are busy, travelling, gardening, working or enjoying the sunshine.

Many people notice they feel more tired, achy or stiff when they are not drinking enough. They may develop headaches, feel less energetic or simply find that moving around feels harder work than usual.

Of course, aches and pains can have many different causes, but staying well hydrated is one of the simplest ways to support your body's normal function, particularly during a heatwave.

A useful tip is not to wait until you feel thirsty. Keeping a bottle of water nearby can make it much easier to drink little and often throughout the day.

The patients who do best over the long term are often the ones who pay attention to the small everyday habits. Regular movement, sensible pacing, good sleep and staying hydrated can all make a difference.

Take care of yourselves in the heat and don't forget to keep that water bottle topped up.

Do you use a footrest under your desk?

I often suggest to patients that they try to keep their feet flat on the floor in front of them when sitting at a desk. It sounds simple, but it can make a surprising difference to comfort and posture.

Recently, during an all-day webinar, I noticed my feet had gradually migrated underneath my chair and I started to become aware of some lower back discomfort. As soon as I put my feet onto a footrest and brought them back in front of me, the symptoms eased.

It was a useful reminder that even small changes in position can make a difference.

A footrest can be a simple addition, particularly if your chair is adjusted to the right height but your feet don't feel fully supported. Regular movement breaks are just as important as your desk set-up.

People often contact Maple Osteopathic Clinic in Bracknell about back pain, neck pain, lower back pain, joint pain, stiffness and restricted movement. Sometimes small changes in everyday habits may help people move more comfortably.

If you have been wondering whether osteopathy may be right for you, or would simply like to talk things through, please give the clinic a call. I am always happy to answer questions and advise whether an appointment may be appropriate.
