👀 Did you know eye colour isn’t as simple as looking at a chart❓
😮 In fact, scientists believe 11 different genes play a role in determining the colour of your eyes!

👁️ While parents’ eye colours can give some clues, genetics love to surprise us - meaning your baby’s eye colour might be totally unexpected!

🤒 A normal temperature in babies and children is about 36.4C, but this can vary slightly. A fever is usually considered to be a temperature of 38C or above.

👶 Your baby may have a high temperature if they:

🔹 feel hotter than usual to touch on their forehead, back or stomach
🔹 feel sweaty or clammy
🔹 have flushed cheeks

🌡️ If you think your baby has a temperature, it's best to check with a thermometer.

⭐️ Ideally, you need a digital under arm thermometer to get a fast, accurate reading.

👨🏼‍⚕️ You can buy these online or from pharmacies and most large supermarkets.

👇🏼 To take your child's temperature:

🔹 Hold them comfortably on your knee and put the thermometer in their armpit – always use the thermometer in the armpit with children under 5 years to get the most accurate reading.

🔹 Gently, but firmly, hold their arm against their body to keep the thermometer in place for however long it says in the manufacturer's instructions – usually about 15 seconds.

🔹 The display on the thermometer will then show your child's temperature.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully, you should get an accurate reading.

👇🏼 There are a few things that can slightly alter the reading – if your child has been:

🔹 wrapped up tightly in a blanket
🔹 in a very warm room
🔹 very active
🔹 cuddling a hot water bottle
🔹 wearing a lot of clothes
🔹 having a bath

🆒 If so, allow them to cool down for a few minutes, but do not let them get cold or shivery, then take their temperature again to see if there's any change.

🖐️ Ever wondered when your little one will pick a favourite hand?

⬇️ Here’s when hand dominance usually reveals itself - and why it matters!

0–12 months: No preference yet - babies are busy exploring with both hands.

1–2 years: You might spot a leaning, but it’s common to switch hands.

2–4 years: A consistent preference begins to shine through - drawing, feeding, playing.

By age 5–6: Most children in the UK show a clear dominant hand, just in time for primary school!

❓Did you know?

• Around 90% of people are right-handed

• Only 10% are lefties - and they’re more likely to be creative thinkers!

• True ambidexterity (using both hands equally well) is very rare - only about 1% of the population.

💡 Top tip: If your child shows a very strong preference before age 1 - or avoids using one hand - it’s a good idea to check in with a health visitor or GP. Early support can make all the difference

1 – Check before you visit – always check it’s convenient to visit. Don’t just turn up.

2 – Stay home if you’re unwell – even a mild cold can be dangerous for a newborn. Wait until you’re feeling better.

3 – Wash your hands – clean hands help protect little ones from germs before cuddles.

4 – Don’t kiss the baby – kisses can spread viruses that are harmless to adults but serious for babies.

5 – Keep visits short – new parents and babies need plenty of time to rest and recover.

6 – Respect feeding time – feeding comes first. Be patient and give them the space they need.

7 – Make the tea – put the kettle on, bring snacks, or help with the washing up. Small acts make a big difference. Don’t expect to be waited on.

8 – Skip the advice – unless they ask, keep opinions to yourself. Let them figure this out in their own time.

9 – Offer practical help – fold some laundry, empty the dishwasher, or pick up a few useful bits from the shop. Help is the best gift.
