Rinsing After Brushing
🪥 Tuesday Dental Trivia
True or false: You should rinse your mouth with water after brushing.
👉 Answer: False.
After brushing, it’s best to spit out the toothpaste without rinsing. This allows the fluoride in your toothpaste to stay on your teeth for longer, giving it more time to strengthen enamel and help protect against tooth decay.
When you rinse straight away with water, you wash that protective fluoride off too quickly — reducing its benefit.
What we recommend:
• Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
• Spit, don’t rinse after brushing
• Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes afterwards
• Use a fluoride mouthwash at a different time of day, not immediately after brushing
This simple change can make a real difference to your oral health, especially for children and patients at higher risk of decay.
