💙 He came to BRI for treatment. He came back with a gift.

Bradford cancer survivor Nigel Firth has donated his painting Hope to Bradford Royal Infirmary as a heartfelt thank you to the NHS teams who supported him throughout his cancer journey.

Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, Nigel underwent robotic surgery at BRI before later receiving radiotherapy at St James’s University Hospital Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

A lifelong lover of art and creativity, Nigel wanted his painting to bring a little brightness to patients and families at BRI.

“If it brings a smile to people’s faces, I will be very happy. My aim was for people to look at the picture and smile when they are being treated. It signifies ‘hope’ that there will be brighter days ahead.”

Nigel also has a special connection to our Trust. His late mother, Ann, worked at St Luke’s Hospital and BRI for more than two decades, as well as serving as a district nurse.

He has shared an important message for other men too: if you have concerns or worries about your prostate, speak to your GP. It is never too early or too late to get checked.

A huge thank you to Nigel for this beautiful gift and for sharing a little bit of Hope with our patients, families and colleagues. 💙🎨

🎰 Gambling is reaching Bradford children earlier than we might think!

Nearly 1 in 3 young people aged 12 to 15 surveyed in Bradford said they had spent money on gambling.

New findings from the Born in Bradford Age of Wonder study, involving more than 7,000 school pupils, highlight why conversations about gambling harm need to start early.

🔴 29% had gambled at least once
🎰 1 in 6 had used fruit or slot machines
🎮 More than half had spent real money in online games
🎁 More than 1 in 4 had bought loot boxes or similar reward packs

And it is not just about gambling websites and apps.

Young people can encounter gambling or gambling-like features through gaming, fruit machines, private bets and other everyday activities.

The findings reinforce the importance of early education and prevention, helping young people and families understand the risks before harm develops.

Bradford Council and partners are already taking action through the Gambling-Related Harms Action Plan, including the new Youth Education Service (YES) Bradford, which provides harm reduction education in schools and youth settings.

Last week marked Bike to Work Day, so we're sharing this inspiring story from a colleague who swapped four wheels for two.

Having access to a cycle hub and support through workplace cycling initiatives helped build the confidence to get back on the bike. Now, a short cycle commute helps clear the mind, stay active and improve overall wellbeing.

Sometimes, the biggest changes start with a small step... or a few turns of the pedals.

An amber heat-health alert is in place across parts of England from today until 14 August.

During an amber alert, hot weather can put more people’s health at risk – not just those who are usually more vulnerable.

Older people, young children and people with existing health conditions may be particularly at risk.

Take extra care and look out for others who may struggle in the heat.

⚠️ An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued across a majority of England, while the North East is under a Yellow Alert. These alerts are in place from 9am on Tuesday 11 August until 9am on Friday 14 August.

We recently came together to celebrate the achievements of our resident doctors and locally employed doctors who have spent the last academic year training and caring for patients across Bradford Teaching Hospitals.

The annual event recognised their dedication, professionalism and commitment to delivering compassionate care, while also celebrating colleagues who received awards for their outstanding contributions.

As Consultant Nephrologist and Clinical Tutor for LEDs, Mansoor Ali said: "Wherever they go, we hope they take the BTHFT values with them. We are all very proud of them."

Congratulations to everyone recognised, and thank you for the difference you have made to our patients, colleagues and communities.
