Some safety advice if you are planning to watch tonight's partial solar eclipse 🌒

Learn how to protect your eyes whilst watching the partial solar eclipse!

We probably shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun without the right protection can cause permanent damage to your eyesight – so you need to take care. Remember, your normal sunglasses may look great, but they won't cut it.

Medication & Heat Risks 💊☀️

Did you know that certain prescription medications—including some used for ADHD, seizures, and mental health support—can make children and teens much more sensitive to heat and sunlight? Some treatments can reduce the body’s ability to sweat, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion. Always check your child's medication leaflets and keep them extra cool on hot days.

Speak to your pharmacist or GP for advice on sun sensitivity.

If you take any of the medicines detailed below, arrange to have a medicines review with a pharmacist, your GP or nurse. Don’t forget to include any over-the counter medicines you take.

Summer Transition & The "Invisible School" Routine 🗓️

Anxiety loves uncertainty. The sudden loss of a structured school routine can trigger behavioural changes, regressions, or high anxiety for children and young people with SEMH needs. Creating a loose, visual daily rhythm—such as setting predictable blocks for breakfast, outdoor time, quiet time, and screens—helps children and teens feel safe, secure, and grounded even when schools are closed.

📱🎮 Teenagers, Screentime & Gaming Habits This Summer
With the summer holidays in full swing, screens and consoles are often a big part of how teenagers relax, unwind, and stay in touch with friends. While gaming is a fantastic way to socialize and build digital skills, habits can easily slide out of balance over the long break.

The youth charity Ygam highlights that modern gaming is rapidly changing. Features like "loot boxes" and in-game microtransactions are increasingly blurring the lines between gaming and gambling, making digital awareness more important than ever.

💡 Top Tips for Parents This Summer
💬 Talk Openly: Chat regularly with your teen about their favorite games, online worlds, and how in-game spending works.

🛑 Watch for Signs: Pay attention if screentime starts noticeably affecting their sleep, mood, or everyday behavior.

🌳 Balance with 'Green Time': Encourage them to swap screen time for outdoor activities to give their eyes and brains a much-needed rest.

Parent Support: For free guides, advice, and practical tips on promoting healthy gaming habits, visit the Ygam Family Hub.

☀️ Sensory-Friendly Sun Protection for Neurodiverse Children
For children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), sensory processing differences, or tactile defensiveness, applying standard sticky sunscreen can cause real physical distress. Keeping your child safe in the sun doesn't have to be a daily battle.

Here are a few sensory-friendly alternatives to make sun safety stress-free for the whole family:

Sunscreen Sprays & Continuous Mists: Quick and easy to apply without heavy rubbing. Tip: Spray onto your hands first (or use a soft makeup sponge) to gently dab onto sensitive areas like the face.

UV-Protective Clothing & Rash Guards: Reduces the amount of skin that needs lotion, offering full protection with soft, breathable fabric.

Mineral Powder Sunscreen Brushes: Applies smoothly like soft makeup powder—no greasy residue or wet feel.

Roll-On & Stick Sunscreens: Gives children more control over the application process and keeps their hands clean.

Pre-Chilled Lotion: Try keeping a gentle, fragrance-free lotion in the fridge—the cool sensation can sometimes feel soothing rather than overwhelming.

Parent Tip: Involve your child by letting them practice applying sunscreen on a favorite toy or choosing their own protective sun hat!
