Brailsford and the surrounding villages sit in the amber alert zone for heat-health this week, with the alert running from 9am on Wednesday 29 July to 9am on Thursday.

In a rural community like ours, it's easy to forget how much the heat can take it out of you, so keep water close by and try to stay out of the sun during the warmest part of the afternoon.

A quick check on an older neighbour who lives a bit further off the beaten track can go a long way. See below for more details:

🟠⚠️ An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued across the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East, with a Yellow Heat-Health Alert in place across Yorkshire, the West Midlands and the South West.

These alerts will be in place from 9am Wednesday 29 July until Thursday 30 July at 9am.

☀️ A little sun-safety reminder for the warmer days ahead.

It’s easy to think about sunscreen when we’re on holiday, but sunburn can happen here in the UK too, even when it’s cloudy.

The NHS recommends choosing sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and 4-star UVA protection, using enough to properly cover exposed skin and reapplying it regularly throughout the day.

It’s also worth remembering that sunscreen shouldn’t be your only protection. Spending time in the shade when the sun is strongest, covering up with suitable clothing, wearing a hat and sunglasses, and taking extra care with babies and children all make a difference.

🛡️ Protect yourself against MenB before you head off to university or college this autumn
Meningococcal group B (MenB) disease is uncommon but can be very serious, causing meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning).
The NHS is offering the MenB vaccine to eligible young people to help provide protection at a time when they may be mixing with lots of new people in shared accommodation, colleges and universities.
✅ You may be eligible if you are:
• Aged 17–18 (born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008)
• Starting university or eligible residential further education this autumn and born on or after 21 July 2001
💉 Two doses are needed for the best protection.
📅 Eligible young people can:
• Book online from 13 July
• Visit participating pharmacies from 20 July
