A change and a reminder about our Post meeting this Thursday, 16 July. The Post was awarded a recruiting streamer during the Dept convention last month. I’ll be attaching that to our Post flag at this meeting so a meeting change from Zoom to an in-person meeting starting at 1200 hrs. We’ll be in the Lakenheath Military and Family Readiness Center (MFRC), Wales conference room. The MFRC is B950 – the Lakenheath Community Bank is behind that building.

The American Legion Membership Year (MY) kicked off on 1 July. I have the 2027 membership cards so if you’re attending the meeting – a great chance to pay your ‘27 dues and get that card. Dues remain at $40 this year. If you can’t make the meeting, we’ll be at the BX on Friday, 24 July from 11:30 – 13:00 hrs as Part of AAFES’ “Veterans Hiring Day” event. I’m happy to talk VA disability applications too so stop by and see us.

Speaking of VA disability, if you’re tracking veterans’ bills on Capitol Hill you’ve no doubt heard of the Take Care of American’s Veterans Act. This bill consolidates 60 veterans’ bills as Congress pushes to get this legislation done. There’s some buzz on social media that the National Commander has addressed – the link below will explain the American Legion’s stance on this consolidated bill:

A reminder that any outstanding legislation that isn’t passed by the end of the current 118th Congress (basically) at the end of the year – dies. This is driving the urgency to get this consolidated bill over the line not to mention VA’s proposal to divert $58B away from Veterans’ programs – this is definitely worth a read.

A few updates for you on this rainy Saturday East of England evening. I’ve been traveling and trying to get caught up so some old-ish news first. I attended the RAF Lakenheath HS Jr ROTC Awards Banquet on 8 May. Was happy to present Cadet “K” with the AL Scholastic Award and Cadet “C” with the AL Military Excellence Award. It’s always a pleasure to support the HS JROTC Program.

Thanks to Comrade Darrell and Comrade John for representing the Post at the Memorial Day remembrance at Madingley ABMC Cemetery. If you’ve not visited this hallowed ground pencil in a visit for this summer.

As some of you may know I’m a Dept Service Officer. If you’re in the RAF Alconbury area, I’ll be on Alconbury Tuesday/16 June. I’ll be doing a VA Claims class at 10:00 hrs at the MFRC and then seeing clients. If you have questions on a claim or want to explore options – stop by and see me after 11:30.

I’ll be virtually attending the Dept annual convention on Jun 19 and 20. Our July meeting will be via Zoom and is tentatively scheduled for Thursday/16 Jul. Will pass along all the news from Dept at this meeting. July is also the kick off month for the American Legion 2027 membership year. More on that and the July meeting later.

Last – 82 years ago today, D Day, Allied forces were fighting their way into France. The Greatest Generation are getting fewer and fewer with each passing day but a heartfelt salute to these brave souls. We owe them a debt of gratitude that can’t really ever be repaid.

Its almost Christmas - where has 2025 gone. As you settle in for the festive period I hope you have some family time and can recharge your batteries in the coming days.

Two reminders - for those members who've renewed, thank you. The life blood of the American Legion is its membership. As I say all the time, just being a member is so important. The larger we are, the better Congress pays attention when we're working issues that directly impact you - the veteran. If you've not yet renewed, your membership expires on 31 Dec. Legion membership is calendar year driven - please renew today. Two - our next Post meeting is tentatively scheduled for Thurs/22 Jan/1600 hrs (GMT) on Zoom. Liberty Nation - it was a different day, with the gov’t shut down, for Veterans Day recognition at Madingley ABCM Cemetery Cambridge yesterday but thanks to the dedicated staff it was a great day - the English weather even cooperated! A shout out to the AF JROTC cadets from RAF Alconbury HS. They did a truly awesome job including presenting the colors for the ceremony. If you’re a parent of one these cadets - a proud family moment as they were awesome! Pictures attached - including a bad selfie of me and the crew. Pictured EG02 members John and Darrell and EG02 founding member Gary (far right) now with London Post 1. Thank you again to the wonderful cemetery staff for making this happen.
