Ann Ferguson - Physio Fundamentals

Ann Ferguson - Physio Fundamentals Experienced Physiotherapist with an interest in movement, breath work, muscle activation (CSP & HCPC registered)

As a physiotherapist with extensive experience in both NHS and private practice, I take a unique, whole-person approach to helping people overcome pain, recover from injury, and achieve their goals. My practice is grounded in the latest understanding of how pain is produced, informed by cutting-edge research in pain science and rehabilitation.

šŸ’” What Sets My Approach Apart? Traditional physiother

apy often focuses solely on the physical aspects of injury or pain. I go beyond this, working to uncover the why behind your symptoms and providing a comprehensive pathway to recovery:

- Root Cause Focus: Whether you’re recovering from injury or dealing with chronic pain, I assess the underlying factors—like movement patterns, breathing mechanics, the role of your nervous system, and previous injury history.
- Pain Science Integration: Pain is complex, shaped by both your body and your brain. I incorporate the latest evidence to help you understand what’s happening and empower you with tools to move forward.
- Holistic Rehabilitation: Recovery isn’t just about healing a particular injury or area —it’s about the experience of the whole body. This may involve also addressing issues such as stress, emotional responses, and the nervous system’s role in how we experience pain and movement.
- Breathing and Biomechanics: Proper breathing and efficient movement are at the heart of my approach. These foundational elements enhance healing, restore balance, and build resilience.

✨ Rehabilitation & Recovery Tailored to You

Whether you’re looking to recover from an injury, break free from persistent pain, or return to peak performance, I provide a customised plan that works with your body, not against it. Through a graded exposure rehabilitation system, we’ll:

- Rebuild strength and confidence one step at a time.
- Rewire unhelpful movement patterns that may be holding you back.
- Aim to identify emotional or stress triggers that can amplify pain or slow recovery.
- Set meaningful, functional goals to get you back to what you love.

🌈 Why I Do What I Do
I’m passionate about giving my clients the tools to take control of their recovery. My goal isn’t just to help you heal—it’s to empower you to move freely, overcome challenges, and achieve your full potential.

Pain isn't just a signal from injured tissue—it's the brain's interpretation of signals from the body, influenced by multiple factors including your emotional and physical state.

Here are the main reasons stress makes pain worse:

1. Stress makes your nervous system more sensitive.

If stress is prolonged, your nervous system can become more reactive, causing normal pain signals to feel stronger. This is sometimes called "pain sensitisation."

2. Muscles become tense.

Stress often causes unconscious muscle tightening, especially in the neck, shoulders, jaw, and back. Persistent tension can lead to headaches, neck pain, back pain, and muscle soreness.

3. Inflammation may increase.

Chronic stress can disrupt the immune system and contribute to low-grade inflammation, which can worsen conditions like arthritis or other inflammatory pain disorders.

4. Your brain pays more attention to pain.

Stress, anxiety, and worry make the brain more vigilant for potential threats, including pain. This increased focus can make pain feel more intense and harder to ignore.

5. Stress affects sleep and activity.

Poor sleep, fatigue, and reduced physical activity—all common consequences of stress—can further increase pain sensitivity and slow recovery.

Is there something you really want to get back to doing?

You start strong… but somehow your rehab keeps slipping down the priority list?
This is common. Once the pain settles, rehab often stops — even though you’re not quite back to the activity you love. That’s where a structured rehab plan makes all the difference. Clear milestones. Real progress. Ongoing motivation.

At Physio Fundamentals, rehab is never one-size-fits-all. We work together to create a plan built around your goal — and map out exactly how you’ll get there. With targeted exercises for maximum impact and support through every milestone, we’ll help you return to your activity with confidence.

If you’re done with piecemeal rehab, book your assessment today and take the first step back to doing what you love.

🌟 We’re delighted to see SIRPA Practitioner Katie Rothwell featured in the Shropshire Star, sharing her powerful personal story of chronic back pain and recovery.

Katie’s experience began with debilitating pain that left her unable to do everyday things, including picking up her own baby. After conventional routes failed to bring lasting relief, she began exploring the deeper role of the nervous system, stress, emotions and past experiences in persistent pain.

Today, Katie uses her own lived experience, alongside her SIRPA training, to support others who are living with ongoing pain symptoms such as back pain, fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Her story is such an important reminder that persistent pain does not always mean the body is damaged or broken. For many people, understanding the role of the brain and nervous system can open the door to hope, confidence and meaningful change.

A huge congratulations to Katie on this wonderful feature. šŸ’™
