"After years of searching through ancestry records with my dad, trying to piece together our heritage, we eventually hit a wall. The 1926 Census of the Irish Free State has just been released online, giving a rare glimpse into life in Ireland 100 years ago.

You can search your family and see details like where they were living and what kind of work they were doing at the time.

Here’s what Ireland looked like back then:

• Just under 3 million people lived in the country
• More than 1,000 of them are still alive today
