Earache in children is common, but not every child with ear pain has acute otitis media.

This parent-facing guide explains referred otalgia from the throat, tonsils, teeth and jaw, as well as ear-canal irritation, wax and infection. It also highlights when pain relief, observation, GP assessment, dental review or paediatric ENT input may be appropriate.

The key message: persistent or recurrent ear pain deserves a broader assessment rather than assuming repeated antibiotics are always the answer.
🚨 Seek urgent help for swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, severe dizziness, significant injury or a very unwell child.

Child dizziness is a broad symptom, not a diagnosis. It may relate to vestibular, neurological, migraine, cardiovascular, visual, metabolic or psychological causes.

This parent-facing guide explains how families can describe dizziness, when ear-related causes should be considered, and which red flags require urgent assessment.

ENT assessment is valuable when dizziness is linked with hearing loss, tinnitus or ear symptoms, but not all dizziness is otological.
Seek urgent help if dizziness comes with fainting, severe headache, weakness, confusion, sudden hearing loss, repeated vomiting or difficulty walking.

Does your child cover their ears or panic around everyday noises like vacuums or public hand dryers? 🎧❌

It can be distressing to watch, but this heightened reaction—known clinically as hyperacusis—is surprisingly common in young children. Frequently, it is a temporary "rebound effect" that happens right after a bout of childhood Glue Ear clears up! When the fluid blocks sound, the brain turns its internal volume dial up. Once the fluid drains, normal sounds suddenly feel overwhelming.

In his latest medical blog, Consultant Paediatric ENT Surgeon Mr Gaurav Kumar breaks down why this happens, why avoiding noise with continuous ear defenders can actually prolong the issue, and how to help your child regain control.

“Why is fluid, pus or blood coming from my child’s ear?”

Ear discharge can be alarming, but there are several possible causes.

A middle-ear infection can sometimes create a small perforation in the eardrum, allowing infected fluid to drain. Other causes include an outer-ear infection, discharge through a grommet or irritation of the ear canal.

đźš« Do not put cotton buds or other objects inside the ear.
đźš« Do not automatically use leftover ear drops from a previous infection.

Seek urgent medical help for swelling behind the ear, severe worsening pain, significant dizziness, facial weakness or a very unwell child.

A new parent guide explains what different types of ear discharge may mean and when paediatric ENT assessment may be appropriate.

Has your child put something in their nose or ear?

Beads, peas, toy parts, tissue, magnets and button batteries are common childhood ENT emergencies.

The most important rule: do not poke blindly with cotton buds or tweezers — it can push the object deeper.

Seek urgent help if it may be a button battery, magnet, sharp object, or if your child has breathing difficulty, bleeding or severe pain.

A question we hear often in the clinic: "Can you see the grommet in the ear?" Usually, the honest answer is no — grommets are millimetres in size and sit within the eardrum itself, making them very difficult to view without a microscope or video otoscope. For GPs and patients across London and Essex, our latest blog explains what's normal after grommet surgery, when discharge or hearing changes warrant review, and how we assess grommet position and function in clinic.

Persistent snoring is one of the most common reasons for referrals to paediatric ENT clinics.

While many children have naturally large tonsils, symptoms such as mouth breathing, restless sleep, witnessed pauses in breathing and daytime behavioural changes should prompt further assessment.

This new parent guide explains how enlarged tonsils affect sleep, when surgery may be appropriate and what families can expect from assessment and treatment, with evidence-based links to NHS and ENT UK guidance.

Is your child really ignoring you — or can they not hear clearly?
Glue ear is a common cause of temporary hearing loss in children and can affect speech, school confidence and behaviour.
Common signs include loud TV volume, asking “what?”, unclear speech, recurrent ear infections, mouth breathing or snoring.
A paediatric ENT assessment can help identify whether your child needs monitoring, hearing support, grommets or adenoid treatment.

Flying soon with a child who has glue ear? Read this before take-off.

That exciting holiday flight can quickly turn stressful if your child’s ears are already blocked.

Glue ear can make pressure changes during take-off and landing feel painful — and some children may cry, complain of earache, or struggle to hear properly during the journey.

âś… What can help?
đź‘‚ Get persistent ear symptoms checked before travel
🍼 Encourage swallowing, sipping water, or chewing during take-off and landing
🧴 Pack nasal saline and age-appropriate pain relief
⚠️ Avoid flying if there is severe ear pain, fever, discharge, or an active infection unless medically advised

A calm flight starts with clear ears.
