Can your child’s adenoids grow back after surgery?

Yes—but significant regrowth is uncommon.

If snoring or mouth breathing returns after adenoidectomy, it does not automatically mean the adenoids have grown back.

Is your older child still drooling or dribbling?

Persistent drooling is not always because a child produces too much saliva.

Sometimes the problem is saliva control.

Possible contributors include:

👃 blocked nose
👄 mouth breathing
😴 enlarged adenoids
🗣️ oral-motor or swallowing difficulties
🎨 reduced swallowing while concentrating
😴 tiredness.

If your child also snores, sleeps with their mouth open or seems constantly blocked through the nose, an ENT assessment may help identify whether the nose, tonsils or adenoids are contributing.

🚨 Sudden drooling with inability to swallow, stridor or breathing difficulty is different and needs urgent medical assessment.

One tonsil looks bigger than the other in your child — should you worry?

The reassuring news is that mild tonsil asymmetry is often benign.

Possible explanations include:

🔹 normal anatomical variation
🔹 previous tonsillitis
🔹 benign tonsil enlargement
🔹 one tonsil sitting further forwards than the other.

Has your child been hit in the nose—and now it looks swollen or crooked?

First, know that swelling can make a nose look fractured even when it isn’t displaced.

For the first few days:

🧊 use a wrapped cold pack
💊 use age-appropriate pain relief
👃 for a nosebleed: sit forward and pinch the soft part firmly
❌ don’t try to straighten the nose yourself.

Once the swelling settles, compare the nose with an older photo.

If it remains newly crooked or breathing is significantly blocked, a timely ENT assessment may be needed.

🚨 Important: painful purple swelling inside the nose, worsening blockage of both nostrils, uncontrollable bleeding, clear watery nasal fluid after significant trauma, severe headache, visual problems, or neurological symptoms need urgent medical assessment.

Persistent throat clearing in children is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

The differential can include rhinitis/upper-airway mucus, post-viral laryngeal irritation, chronic cough, habit cough and vocal tics.

A particularly important distinction is between benign repetitive throat clearing and symptoms occurring during swallowing. Coughing or choking with food or fluids, wet voice and recurrent chest infections require a different pathway.

Does your child's ear hurt after swimming?

It may not be the usual childhood middle-ear infection.

Swimmer's ear affects the skin of the ear canal and can cause:

👂 ear pain
💧 discharge
🤏 pain when the ear is touched
😣 itching
🔇 blocked or muffled hearing.

Avoid cotton buds and keep a painful or discharging ear dry until it has been assessed.

🚨 Seek prompt medical advice for severe worsening pain, swelling behind the ear, facial weakness, significant dizziness or a child who appears very unwell.

Occasional snoring with a cold is common. But watch more carefully if your child also:

🫁 stops breathing briefly
😮‍💨 gasps or snorts
👄 sleeps with their mouth open
💦 sweats heavily
🛏 sleeps very restlessly
🥱 seems tired or struggles to concentrate.

Large tonsils or adenoids are among the possible causes of sleep-disordered breathing in children.

A short video of your child's sleep can sometimes help during an ENT assessment.

🚨 Significant breathing difficulty, blue/grey lips, severe choking or difficulty waking needs emergency help.

Has your child been told they have a “retracted eardrum”?

This means the eardrum is being pulled inwards, often due to middle-ear pressure, glue ear, repeated colds or Eustachian tube problems.

It is not always an active ear infection, but it can affect hearing and may require monitoring.

Watch for:
✔️ asking for the TV louder
✔️ saying “what?” often
✔️ recurrent ear infections
✔️ ear pressure or popping
✔️ speech or school-listening concerns
✔️ ear discharge

🚨 Seek urgent help for severe pain, swelling behind the ear, sudden hearing loss, facial weakness, severe dizziness or a very unwell child.
