Celebrating EAS day with a post from Professional Diploma graduate Arlene from Quiet Kin Counselling & Animal Assisted Therapy with a lovely insight into her horse centric environment. This best of Equine Facilitated coaching and therapy happens when both horses and humans are able to make choices that support their physical and mental wellness. With thanks to the team at HETI - Horses in Education and Therapy International for all the hard work supporting Equine Assisted and Facilitated Service providers and educators around the globe 🙏🐴♥️

"The level of psychological safety held by the Equi-Scotia team is exceptional." 💚

When people feel safe, they ask better questions, explore new ideas, and learn more deeply. That's the environment we strive to create in everything we do.

If you're working through our self-paced Introduction to Equine Facilitated Learning & Therapy course, we'd love to see you at our Live Directors' Drop-In on 20th July.

A welcoming space to ask questions, share reflections, and deepen your understanding alongside others exploring this work.

Ideal for educators, coaches, therapists, and equine professionals looking to find out about coaching life skills through engaging with horses.

📅 20th July - still time to grab a space

It’s always a tonic to witness our graduates put learning on our courses into action to create spaces where horses and people can thrive! special thanks to Lisa Ashton Equicoach.Life whose input to our curriculum design made sure our Community are up to speed on social licence and the 5 domains! 🙏🐴♥️

HETI - Horses in Education and Therapy International

One of the first things I do each morning is check the ponies on the cameras.

Sometimes I catch moments like this and feel incredibly lucky.

Looking into the stable, each horse is simply… being a horse. Choosing to rest together, with the older 2 watching over Ted. They have the freedom to make choices throughout their day—whether that’s grazing, seeking shelter, resting, or spending time with one another.

For me, this is what good horse care is about. Not just meeting their physical needs, but recognising that their emotional wellbeing matters too.

I do my best to manage each horse as an individual while giving them the opportunity to express natural behaviours. Their environment is built around the principles of the Five Domains of animal welfare: good nutrition, a safe and enriching environment, physical health, opportunities for natural behaviours and social connection, all of which contribute to what matters most—their mental wellbeing.

The Five Domains remind us that welfare isn’t simply about preventing suffering. It’s about creating the conditions that allow an individual to thrive, not just survive.

It’s something I find myself reflecting on beyond the stable too.

As a psychotherapist, I often meet people who have become incredibly good at surviving. They get up, go to work, care for everyone else, keep going, and from the outside everything can look “fine”. Yet inside, they may feel disconnected, exhausted, misunderstood or simply stuck.

Counselling isn’t about fixing people. Much like caring for my horses, it’s about creating the conditions where growth becomes possible. A space where there is safety, connection, curiosity, and choice. A place to understand yourself more deeply, gently loosen old patterns, and reconnect with who you are beyond simply coping.

Whether it’s horses or humans, I believe wellbeing is about more than the absence of distress. It’s about having the opportunity to feel safe enough to be yourself, connected enough to belong, and free enough to grow.

Perhaps that’s what thriving really means.

Finding calm in connection.

FRUSTRATED?!?

We asked delegates for 3 words to describe their experience of our Self Care workshops at Ingliston Equestrian in April.

One person said "FRUSTRATED... that I only booked one day NOT TWO!"

A growing number of professionals from equine, coaching and mental health backgrounds are telling us they love the way that we hold space for them on their learning journey.

Upcoming online and in-person events have been added to our page today!

Feel free to share with contacts who are committed to unlearning to lean into the most up to date evidence based practice for equine welfare and personal development.

STILL TIME TO JOIN US!

In every stable yard, conversations happen every day that matter more than we sometimes realise. 💚

A quick “How are you doing?”
A quiet chat while mucking out.
Someone noticing when another person just isn’t themselves.

Supporting mental wellbeing is already part of equestrian life — but knowing how to begin a safe, supportive conversation can make a real difference.

Join Equi-Scotia Director & Trainer Jo Wood for our Qualifications Scotland & Ofqual Accredited First Aid for Mental Health Certificate evening classes on 3rd & 4th June.

These friendly, practical sessions will help you:
✨ Recognise the signs someone may be struggling
✨ Build confidence in starting supportive conversations
✨ Understand how to respond appropriately
✨ Learn the importance of self-care too

Because looking after ourselves and each other is just as important as caring for our horses.

📅 3rd & 4th June

30/04/2026

Join Prof. Selcuk Akpinar on 15th May at 12pm CEST (Paris/Brussels) where he'll be discussing 'Bridging Practice and Evidence: Feasible Measurement Strategies in Equine-Assisted Programs'.

This HETI Live will explore practical and feasible approaches to measuring outcomes in Equine-Assisted Services (EAS). While evidence-based practice is increasingly important, many programs face challenges in implementing complex assessment tools. The discussion will focus on simple, time-efficient, and meaningful measurement strategies that can be easily integrated into everyday practice, helping practitioners bridge the gap between field experience and scientific evidence.

If you've already registered for HETI Live meetings, you will automatically receive the meeting link. If you would like to join them, visit:
