Such a lovely session at Role Play Lane today, met some lovely families and children. I could have stayed there all day to join in with the fun! Such a great place for little and bigger ones!! What does modelling core and topic vocabulary naturally on a high-tech AAC device look like?

🌟Modelling means showing the location of these symbols as you do something naturally
🌟 Modelling without expectation is so important - avoid adding any pressure on the young person to press these.
🌟Give opportunities for choice making e.g. 'do you want more or stop'?, 'big or little'?
🌟 Even if the young person hasn't got symbolic understanding yet, by modelling without pressure, you are teaching the location and meaning of these cells e.g. everytime I press 'more', I repeat the activity/ action.
🌟 Start off small and use motivating activities
🌟 Remember, AAC takes months and months of modelling often before the young person starts to use it themselves
🌟Always have a low-tech (paper based) option as a backup
🌟AAC does not stop a child from talking/ communicating - in fact, it often does the opposite as you are increasing communication success, confidence and opportunities 🩷

Come along to our Role Play Session on Monday 6th July, 12-2pm, where children can enjoy all the fun of our Role Play Village in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

We're also delighted that Nicola Ryan from CommuNico Speech & Language Therapy will be joining us during the session. Nicola will be available to chat with parents and carers, answer questions and offer friendly advice and support around speech, language and communication, all while children enjoy playing.

No appointments, no pressure, just another way we're bringing support into the community. 💜

🌟School visit this afternoon to demonstrate a Speech & Language Therapy programme to TAs and supporting a client to improve his expressive and receptive language skills, using games and rewards to support attention and engagement.

🌟Colourful Semantics are a great way to support sentence structure and help to expand on language, moving on to narrative skills. It's important to be able to recall events and use appropriate sentence structure and grammar. We used an interactive programme on the iPad which was a big hit today!

🌟Other grammar and comprehension tasks were covered too.

🌟Staff learnt lots from this session and are now able to implement in daily tasks and find more opportunities to support this pupil's language skills in school.

🌟Practice outside of SLT sessions is vital to support progress. It's the daily opportunities and generalisation of skills which makes the biggest difference! Parents/ school staff being part of SLT therapy sessions are very important.

We're delighted to welcome Nicola Ryan from CommuNico SLT to our regular Role Play Session on Monday 6th July, 12-2pm!

Nicola is a Speech & Language Therapist who will be joining us during the session, giving families the opportunity to meet her, find out more about speech and language development, and ask any questions they may have in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Nicola has over 20 years' experience and is passionate about supporting children, young people and families with their communication needs. She has specialist interests in AAC, Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) and stammering, and takes a warm, creative and family-centred approach to her work.

As always, children can enjoy all the fun of our Role Play Village while grown-ups have the chance to chat and connect. 💬✨
