I want to share a post about low Selective Mutism. From personal and professional experience, low profile SM, although sometimes not as obvious, it is so rarely understood by others. I am frustrated by the fact many teachers are increasing pressure on children (especially at secondary school) which is heightening the anxiety and making talking/ participating even more difficult for them. Low profile SM can become high profile SM so really does need the same understanding, validation and the right supports. The priority for these children/ young people is safety. If they don't feel emotionally safe then their nervous system is in this constant threat response and they cannot communicate. This is much more than just speaking! I am seeing more and more children with SM who are not able to attend school but if only the right supports could have been put in place, then they could have much better outcomes!
I will share more information on this in future posts. 🩷

Ironic for a Speech Therapist I know! 🙈 Losing my voice this week after a flare up of my oesophagitis and now laryngitis. It feels impossible to rest my voice but the vocal cords are like any other muscle in the body, if there is damage and you continue using that muscle, the inflammation and damage will get worse. So the best advice is complete voice rest!
Being a mum, dog owner, chatty neighbour as well as a busy full-time working self-employed SLT, this feels impossible to do. However, I need to practice what I preach! Hoping to rest over the weekend and have some voice come Monday 🤞🫢😷💛

I like this infographic. As someone with ADHD, I often get stuck in hyperfocus mode to the point that I will ignore my own body signals that I am stressed/ hungry/ tired/ or just depleted in my energy/resilience. It's really important that we are aware of what our body and brain needs during these moments as will impact our emotional and physical wellbeing. Easier said than done I know! Anyone else relate to this?

I highly recommend My Autism Assessment by Wade Therapy Services for assessment of autism and/or ADHD. If anyone has any queries just drop Chris a message.

What do our free consultations look like?

Well it’s a 15 mins chat where you can:
- describe your current position and differences
- ask me questions about how your position alines with Autism and / or ADHD
- find out about the assessment process

After our chat I’ll sent you some standardised Autism and / or ADHD screening forms to forms complete.

Once we get your forms back I’ll analyse them and then send you a clinical opinion as to whether an Autism and / or ADHD assessment would be prudent or whether a different pathway is recommended.

Oh and there’s zero catch / tie-in to our service 🫶

To find out more feel free to DM us, bear with me as we’re travelling through 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🇫🇷 🇧🇪 🇳🇱 for the half term!

Chris

⭐This is a great explanation of why some children struggle with following instructions as well as some useful strategies to support their understanding or auditory processing.⭐
This is really common for children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), receptive language difficulties and children with high anxiety (as when they are anxious, they are less able to process information/ verbal instructions). Visual supports also help. 💛

This is sadly a clinical area which is frequently unsupported and not understood. 💔

Selective mutism is an anxiety disorder which stops a person being able to speak in some situations.

Support shouldn’t have to wait until diagnosis and at AP Cymru, it doesn’t.

This photo shows what 4,990 children on a waiting list really looks like…

And this is what 4,990 children on a waiting list can really mean:
➡️ 4,990 children waiting to be understood.
➡️ 4,990 nervous systems trying to cope with systems not built for them.
➡️ 4,990 families pushing for answers.
➡️ 4,990 delays in support.

Beyond those numbers are even more families fighting to be heard or waiting to be referred.

That's why at AP Cymru, we believe support shouldn’t only begin at diagnosis… Because children don’t only begin struggling the day paperwork is approved.

This is why NO diagnosis is needed to join our Neurodiversity Charity or access our support. While families wait, we provide:
✅️ Workshops & guidance
✅️ Advocacy & signposting
✅️ Parent wellbeing & support services
✅️ Inclusive family activities
✅️ Youth clubs & peer connection
✅️ Safe spaces where families feel seen, believed & understood

Although we can’t remove the waiting lists, we CAN make sure that families aren’t waiting alone.

⚠️ Why are you doing this? - urgent warning⚠️
Please do NOT think this is okay in this heat

Please be careful turning tents, play tents or enclosed spaces into sandpits during hot weather.

In this heat these spaces can become dangerously hot VERY quickly, especially for autistic and ADHD children who may struggle to recognise when they’re overheating or thirsty.

✔️Sand holds heat.
✔️Tents trap heat.
✔️And sensory play can make children hyperfocus and ignore the signs their body needs a break.

If you’re making a sensory sand area outside:
Keep it fully shaded and exposed not enclosed

A fun sensory setup can turn unsafe faster than people realise in this weather. Stay safe everyone 💛
