Flu vaccinations are now available for pregnant women and children as the NHS in the South West rolls out the first phase of its flu programme to protect families ahead of winter.

Flu can be much more than a bad cold. Every winter thousands of children need hospital care because of the virus, while pregnant women are also at greater risk of becoming seriously ill.

Children are offered the flu vaccine from September because the virus often spreads quickly among younger age groups.

Most school-aged children will be offered their flu vaccination at school, while parents of 2- to 3-year-olds, and of children in a clinical risk group, will be invited to arrange an appointment through their GP practice.

The child flu vaccine is usually given as a spray in each nostril and is a very quick and painless procedure. The vaccine will help protect children from flu and help to reduce the spread of flu to other children and family members such as parents and grandparents.

Pregnant women should get their flu vaccine to protect themselves and their baby. The flu vaccine provides protection for pregnant women and their babies, reducing the risk of severe complications and providing additional protection for newborn babies.

Pregnant women can get their flu jab at any stage of pregnancy and should speak to their maternity team, GP practice or participating pharmacy about getting protected. Eligible people aged 18 or over can book a flu vaccination appointment using the National Booking Service online or in the NHS App.

Around 104,000 hospitalisations are estimated to have been avoided across England last year and over 2.2 million people received their flu jab in South West throughout winter.

πŸ‘ΆπŸŽ‰ Expecting or recently welcomed another baby to your family? You might be expecting some things to be different, and the vaccine schedule for your baby is one thing that will be.

At the start of this year, the routine childhood vaccination schedule changed. Babies are now offered protection against chickenpox alongside measles, mumps and rubella through the introduction of the MMRV vaccine, which is already part of routine childhood vaccination programmes in several countries, including Canada, Australia and Germany.

πŸ§‘β€πŸΌπŸ’¬ "But why make changes? Isn't chickenpox usually mild?"
While most children experience chickenpox as a mild illness, it can sometimes be more serious and require hospital treatment. In rare cases, it can lead to complications such as chest infections, seizures and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). The MMRV vaccine helps protect children against four serious diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox, while the introduction of the 18-month appointment will help provide them with protection at a younger age.

Confused by food? You aren't alone! We are constantly getting all kinds of information about what we should and shouldn't eat, and a lot of it doesn't even agree! Plans and diets often feel complicated and restrictive – they just don't work for people with busy lives, limited budgets or health issues. 🍎πŸ₯–πŸ₯πŸ₯‘

Most people recognise that they could be eating a bit healthier, and we all have reasons why that is difficult to manage, stick with and make time for.

This is a short introduction, to making a strong, positive start on a healthier you, inside and out. We will look at sensible, realistic options that fit your budget, lifestyle and include the things you love to eat.

We will cover adjustments for conditions such as high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes, and take the myth, mystery and complexity out of healthier eating. We want to help you feel better without struggle or the need for lots of willpower or counting.

This session will involve a short sample of gentle, safe movement, please dress comfortably for this.
