“I didn't even find a lump. Instead, a small, cellulite like dimple that was only noticeable in certain light.

“At the time I thought it may just be ageing skin, but something niggled at me to get it checked and I remember from a poster that puckering of skin can be a sign of breast cancer.

“When I went to the GP surgery I was asked "is it urgent"? Well technically no, but we are always told for any lumps, the earlier you find something, the easier it becomes to treat.

“Initially my GP couldn't find a lump, but because it was technically a 'change', I was still booked into a breast clinic appointment a week later.

“My appointment examination proved difficult to find anything apart from the dimpling, but after several mammograms and ultrasound, I knew there was something.”

“When I was called in to see my surgeon, I was told quite straight; it's likely to be cancer, we just don't know what it is yet. And in that moment your world changes and as I'm sure hundreds of women before me have asked, ‘am I going to die?’. As much as they reassure you this is a very treatable disease, your mind works at 100 miles an hour.”

“I was diagnosed with a lobular cancer which can be more tricky to spot due to the way it develops in lines rather than solid lumps, which we so often are looking for.

“So when you check, really do look. Mine could have been so easily missed. And if you have any doubt, however small, do get it checked.

“I want to share my experience to give people hope that this is now a very treatable disease and if you find yourself in my situation hearing the words 'you have cancer', it really doesn't need to be the end. Instead, it's the start of a different journey you may have not expected to take, but can be an incredibly positive and life changing one.”

Checking your breasts regularly can help you spot any new or unusual changes. Jo’s story is an important reminder to be aware of different breast changes, and to always get these checked out by a GP.

Got a big idea? Grants from £20,000 for Large Scale Community Projects (England)

Community based organisations are invited to apply for funding through the National Lottery’s Reaching Communities England programme.

The programme supports projects that strengthen communities and improve lives across England. Funding is available for initiatives that support communities to:

- come together through inclusive places, spaces and activities (either physical or virtual), especially for communities where people are least able to come together
- help children and young people thrive by developing positive social and emotional skills
- tackle health inequalities by addressing the conditions in which people live, work and grow
- be environmentally sustainable by engaging with climate issues, having a positive environmental impact, and improving access to quality natural spaces

Priority will be given to projects that:

- support places, people or communities experiencing poverty, disadvantage or discrimination
- support people and communities to shape the decisions that affect their lives

Grants range from £20,001 to £20 million for projects lasting up to 5 years.

Most awards are under £500,000. Funding can cover a broad range of costs, including staffing, delivery expenses, community engagement and organisational development.

Eligible applicants include registered charities, voluntary groups, CIOs, CICs, schools and public bodies. Partnerships may also apply.

There is no fixed closing date; applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Decisions can take several months due to the programme's scale and demand.

Young carers have a lot more responsibility than other people their age.

Katie from our lived experience team who has Down syndrome, has written this poem about some of her honest memories of looking after her brother as a young carer.

If you are a young carer, let your GP practice know so that you can access help and support.

A new programme is available for young people with asthma in the East Riding.

Young Live Well: Living Well with Asthma is launched in May, offering a free 12-week programme that supports young people aged 10–18 to build confidence, get active and manage their asthma more effectively.

The programme runs at East Riding Leisure centres in Hornsea and Goole, with further sessions taking place in Bridlington from September.

Each session includes a 15-minute interactive education element followed by a 45-minute guided exercise session, all delivered in a safe, supportive and enjoyable environment.

This programme is ideal for young people who feel their asthma is holding them back from being active or taking part in exercise.
