Gillian and Karen had a lovely evening at the Sintons Annual Summer Drinks event at Wylam Brewery in Newcastle last night, joined by Catherine Ferguson, our newest associate based in the North East. It was a great opportunity to introduce Catherine to colleagues and contacts across the region.

It was lovely to spend the evening catching up with speech and language therapy colleagues who have become friends over the years, and with case managers we regularly work alongside. As much as Zoom has its place, nothing quite beats seeing people face to face and having a proper chat!

Thank you to Sintons for the invitation and for hosting such a fantastic event. It was a brilliant opportunity to reconnect, meet new faces, and enjoy an evening with so many people we're fortunate to work alongside.

The Podcast is now LIVE.

In the latest episode of Evolving Minds, we were happy to join Georgina Davies, Rehabilitation and Partnerships Lead at Brain Injury Group.

We explored cognitive communication following brain injury, discussing how it can affect social interactions, why it is often under-recognised, and the importance of timely assessment and support.

The conversation also covers early intervention, adapting to modern methods of communication, and how individuals and families can access speech and language therapy services.

Whether you're a rehabilitation professional, case manager, legal practitioner, or someone affected by brain injury, this episode offers valuable insight into an often-overlooked area of recovery.

AAC Exhibition at Oldham Athletic football Ground

Kate Gregson and Julia Green attended an AAC exhibition looking at resources and learning about assistive technology. They listened to experts and learned tips and tricks around implementation of AAC and how to make every day technology like iOS iPhones and iPads more accessible, assisting people with communication difficulties move from being observers of life events, to participants.

What a great day.

Proof that I actually made it to the Second Chance Ball!

I'm really enjoying seeing all the photos from the evening popping up on social media, as I was so busy enjoying myself and chatting with so many interesting people that I completely forgot to take any pictures of my own.

Thankfully, Adrian Hawley came to the rescue and shared this one with me. I volunteer alongside Adrian at Headway Huddersfield and District, where he is our Chairman, and I think you'll agree he was absolutely rocking that carnival headdress!

If anyone has any photos with me in them from the evening, I'd love to see them, so please do send them my way. It was a fantastic fundraising event and a real pleasure to spend the evening with so many people supporting such an important cause.

Really enjoyed presenting at the RCSLT NEY Hub Day and having the opportunity to talk about something Karen and I are incredibly passionate about - the evolution of dysphagia assessment and rehabilitation.

A huge thank you to Dr Jo Sandiford and Emma Gregory Assoc CIPD for inviting me to speak and for organising such a thoughtful and engaging event.

My talk explored our journey developing independent VFSS and community FEES services, alongside rehabilitation-focused dysphagia management using approaches such as NMES, EMST, MDTP and sEMG biofeedback. We discussed the importance of instrumental assessment, innovation in service delivery, and the need to continually challenge and examine our practice as the evidence base evolves.

It was also really valuable to hear updates from the RCSLT, particularly in the context of the current political and healthcare climate, and to have the opportunity to network with so many colleagues equally passionate about improving patient outcomes.

Always lovely to see Kathryn Pierce — although unfortunately our parallel sessions were scheduled at exactly the same time, so I sadly missed her talk this year!

One of the best parts of the day was the conversations afterwards. It genuinely feels like dysphagia practice is evolving rapidly, with increasing focus on evidence-based rehabilitation, patient-centred decision making and collaborative models of care.

Exciting times for the profession.

We’re proud to support The Kirkwood through ad-hoc inpatient SLT input, clinical governance support, and training around communication and swallowing difficulties in palliative and end of life care.

Really pleased to receive some positive feedback following a recent training session delivered by Hannah.

Providing training in this area is something we value hugely - helping teams feel more confident managing complex conversations and dysphagia at end of life, while keeping care practical, patient-centred and evidence informed.

Thanks to The Kirkwood team for continuing to work collaboratively with us.

FEES on the road!

On Friday we had a fantastic trip out to STEPS Rehabilitation Centre, Sheffield, taking our FEES service on the road to assess a client in their own environment.

A huge thank you to Rehabilitation Ltd for such a warm welcome, and for the opportunity to have valuable clinical discussions with the excellent Speech and Language Therapy team, including .

FEES (Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) is an invaluable tool for assessing swallowing. Access to high-quality instrumental assessment matters because the right information at the right time can directly shape clinical decisions, reduce risk, and help move a client forward on their rehabilitation journey with confidence.

Being able to provide FEES assessments within a client’s own environment also allows for more meaningful, functional assessment and supports truly person-centred care.
If you would like to find out more about our FEES service, please get in touch — we’d love to discuss how we can support your clients and teams.
