My ADHD brain has been pondering on something this week...

I realised I spend a lot of time wondering if I'm a good mum, a good therapist and a good friend.

But I almost never wonder if I'm a good wife.

In fact, even writing those words made me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Maybe other women do think about it. I honestly don't know. But I realised I don't.

As a couples therapist, that felt like a thought worth exploring. Why does that phrase feel so loaded? And what happens to our relationships when we stop being intentional about them after children?

So I wrote about it.

I'd love to know what you think.

Sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step.

It's completely normal to feel nervous before your first counselling session or to wonder what to expect. While every experience is different, many people leave feeling relieved that they gave themselves the chance to talk.

If you've been thinking about counselling, let this be your reminder that it's OK to start before you feel "ready".

Ever noticed how positive thinking just doesn’t seem to work when you’re really anxious?

That’s because when your brain goes into fight or flight, it’s not looking for reassurance. It’s looking for danger.

Imagine you’re crossing the road and a car suddenly comes hurtling towards you.

Your brain doesn’t stop to think, “Is it definitely going to hit me?”

It just shouts, “MOVE!”

That’s what an anxious brain does. It goes into survival mode, so positive thoughts often don’t land. They’re like pouring water through a sieve.

That’s why, before trying to convince yourself everything’s okay, start with one simple message:

“I am safe.”

Once your brain starts to recognise you’re safe, it’s much easier to think clearly and challenge anxious thoughts.
