A staple of any Martial Artists first aid kit is some form of Dit Da Jow (translated literally as fall hit wine). It’s used primarily for bruising, swelling and pain from acute trauma, injuries often associated with Martial Art practice.

In the acute stage of trauma, when blood stasis is the main pathological factor, many blood moving herbs are included in the formula, such as Hong Hua, Tao Ren, Ru Xiang, Mo Yao, Yan Hu Suo etc. Alongside qi regulating and heat clearing herbs, such as Zhi Zi and Mu Xiang, these have an analgesic effect as well as helping disperse bruising and aiding in faster recovery.

Often a Kung Fu school will have its own secret recipe, passed down from previous generations for the custodianship of only its most loyal students, but there also exists many commercial brands available for those not part of such societies…

There are many different types of Jow’s, not just for acute stage injuries but also for chronic pain. Then the emphasis is on warmer herbs when cold and damp become the more prominent pathological factors, to nourish the tendons and bones, governed by the Liver and Kidney in Chinese Medicine.

Brighton practice update coming soon, in the meantime thought I’d share this pic of the garden. Now we’re well into the Spring according to the 24 Solar Terms you can see the bursting out of colour as Yang continues its ascension before reaching its Zenith at the summer solstice.

Amongst all the chaos in the world, being able to take small moments to appreciate the beauty of nature is a real blessing.

The Sweden chapter has come to an end, and the back to Brighton chapter is beginning. A moment of stillness taken in my garden back home in Brighton. During the warmer months it’s a great place for study, both medicinal and martial! The Buddha statue is a reminder of The Middle Way and the value of looking within. Broadly speaking, taking a middle way in matters of the mind, body and spirit is a brilliant way to approach health and wellness, and it’s really quite simple (which doesn’t always translate as easy!)
