Mothers Uncovered

Mothers Uncovered Mothers Uncovered is an award-winning project for the Livestock charity. We run low cost creative peer support groups for mothers, led by past participants.

Founded 2008. Support our campaign here for better maternal care. www.change.org/SupportMatrescence. Matrescence means the process of becoming a mother. Like adolescence, it is a time of new identity, bodily changes and hormonal fluctuations, yet we don't honour this time or look after mothers properly. Mothers Uncovered helps women at ALL stages of motherhood to reconnect with the women they’ve a

lways been. If you feel your life as a mother is a rollercoaster, with blissful highs and overwhelming lows and some mum and baby groups offer no opportunity to discuss real issues, then Mothers Uncovered is for you. We run a range of groups and events across Sussex and online nationally and are looking to expand. Our sessions are warm, welcoming, non judgemental spaces, involving facilitated discussion and arts activities. Our peer supporters who lead the groups are all past participants. They are not perfect mothers. They certainly don’t want to tell you how to be mothers. They are going through it all too. Participant feedback

A truly valuable experience which pulled me from the brink of post natal depression. Considerate & understanding facilitators. Thank you all so much.”
‘Mothers Uncovered fills a gap you didn’t even know was there.’

Our book
The Secret Life of Mothers, is a compilation of over 50 past participants’ stories, interviews and poems about their motherhood experience, with foreword by Caroline Lucas, MP. Available from Silverdart publishers or Amazon. Awards
Winner of Community Works' Star Sector Award for providing 'support for women at a transitional point in their lives and creating a legacy for future generations.'
Finalist Groundwork Awards 2019

Something important is coming. 🧡

In three weeks, we’re launching Matrescence Matters Week, a week dedicated to something every mother experiences, but many of us have never had a word for.

Matrescence is the transition into motherhood. It can bring profound changes to our bodies, brains, identities, relationships, emotions and the way we see ourselves and the world around us.

Yet while so much attention is placed on the arrival of a baby, the transformation of the mother can be overlooked.

From 26 September to 2 October, we want to change that.

We’ll be sharing experiences, starting conversations and helping more people understand what matrescence is, why it matters and why mothers deserve to feel seen and supported through it.

The word may be unfamiliar. The experience isn’t.

🧡 26 September – 2 October

Delighted to bring you the next episode of with Eirinie Carson.
Eirinie was born in London and is now living in California. She writes about sexual taboos, death and dying, illegal substances, hauntings both real and imagined, and ancestral inheritance in a world desperate to sever the connections between what came before and what is to come. Her work has appeared in LitHub, the Notre Dame Review, Electric Literature, the Sonora Review, the Los Angeles Review, The Unibrow, and others.
We discuss all things and her experiences of motherhood, which shaped her first work of fiction, the maternal gothic novel, Bloodfire, Baby (Dutton, 2026), which has been named one of the year’s best debuts by Debutiful.

Excellent piece here by Julia Sanders, professor of clinical midwifery and advisor to the Amos review.
Balanced, non-judgmental, acknowledging that blaming and vilifying midwives does not improve the matter.

How’s the summer holidays going for you? If you’re parenting small children, you’re quite likely exhausted, wanting everyone to have a good time, despite vastly differing needs.
explains the post-it note suggestion much better than I do, so head to her profile to see it.
Children like to think they have a measure of control in their life and that helps give it to them.
You’re not alone.
And you’re doing the best you can.

I speak to the fabulous Lily Redwood for the latest episode of the Secret Life of Mothers podcast.
Lily writes poems that connect us to ‘the mess and magic of being human’.
Her debut pamphlet ’You Make Me Think Of Swifts’ features a foreword by the equally fabulous Lucy Jones who described it as ‘electrifying and radical’.
Lily is currently working on a collection exploring the mother-daughter bond, drawing on her experience of caring for her mother at end of life.

A mental health charity is looking for new parents who’ve had therapy or counselling during early parenthood to share their stories as part of a national campaign launching this August. The campaign aims to reduce the stigma around getting professional mental health support and help more parents across the UK access the support they need. They want to include as many voices as possible to reflect a wide range of lived experiences.

If you've had therapy or counselling during early parenthood and would be interested in sharing your story to encourage other parents to seek support, we'd love to hear from you.

All stories will be treated sensitively, and there's no obligation to take part. To find out more about how you could get involved, email [email protected].

Ben Needham disappeared from Kos on 24/7/91. He’d been playing outside a house his family was renovating and a moment later, when no-one was watching, he was gone.
I doubt there’s a parent alive who hasn’t had that heartstopping moment of losing their child while out shopping or in a crowd. Moments later they’re found and the parent usually breaks down in shouted tears at the child, all the horrors of ‘what if…?’ running through their minds.
My heart goes out to the Needhams and their 35 years wait to find Ben.

Becoming a mum can completely shift how you feel about work and what you want next in life. If you’re feeling a bit stuck or unsure, you’re not alone.

Our 5 week course at Heene Community Centre is designed to help you figure that out in a really supportive, no pressure space.

We will explore the changes to your identity and how that will impact you going forward.

One participant stated the course ‘has changed the way I understand myself as a mother and woman.’

The sessions will be a mix of peer-led creative activities and planning for the future led by trainer Gill Hasson.

Our first group at WRAP was completely booked up, so don’t delay!
If cost is a barrier, please get in touch.

Your children can be of any age, but we can only have babies of up to 6m in the group itself.
