What is Kinesiology Taping?

Equine kinesiology taping is becoming an increasingly valuable part of many horses’ rehabilitation, performance, wellbeing and maintenance programmes. As a non-invasive drug free option, it’s a great way of supporting our horses and it’s relatively inexpensive too. It compliments other modalities such as massage, physio sessions, chiropractic and osteopathy and can also be used alongside veterinary treatment as part of a wider management plan.
When applied correctly, kinesiology tape can aid recovery after exercise, support rehabilitation following injury, encourage more efficient movement patterns, help reduce muscle tension, increase proprioception by providing additional awareness to specific areas of the body, assist the body’s natural healing processes, and provide gentle support around joints without restricting movement. Most importantly, recent studies have shown it can reduce discomfort by creating an analgesic effect and reducing pain sensitivity.
Kinesiology taping isn’t about simply applying tape though, it’s about understanding the why, where and when to use it, and most importantly adapting each application to suit each horse’s individual needs.
If your therapist offers kinesiology taping, ask what training they have completed. It is suggested that veterinary approval should be granted prior to some tapings and some insurance providers require the professional to have undertaken an in-person course prior to use.
