Yesterday I conducted a funeral for a lovely lady who had chosen the music for her own ceremony. đź’ś

As each piece was played, her family shared that they didn’t really know why she’d chosen those particular songs. It sparked some beautiful conversations, brought back precious memories, and made the service feel even more personal.

It was such a lovely reminder that the music we choose tells a story about who we are. Sometimes it can even leave our loved ones with one final gift… a chance to discover something new about us.

It made me wonder…

Yesterday, at the end of a funeral service, every member of the congregation was invited to take a gerbera flower and place it on the coffin as they left the chapel.

It was such a simple gesture, yet it created one of the most moving moments of the day.

Many people feel unsure around a coffin. They want to show their love, pay their respects, or say a final goodbye, but sometimes they don't quite know how.

By giving everyone a flower, it gave them a purpose. A reason to approach. A chance to pause for a moment, reflect, and make a personal farewell.

One by one, the flowers transformed the coffin into a beautiful tribute, created by the very people whose lives had been touched by the person who had died.

Funerals are not just about words. Sometimes the most powerful moments are the simplest acts of love.

Do you know the stories that matter? ❤️

As a funeral celebrant, one of the greatest privileges I have is sitting with families and hearing about a loved one’s life.

It’s often during those conversations that people discover things they never knew.

The wartime adventure Dad never talked about.

The first job Mum had before she met their father.

The reason Grandad always carried a particular photograph in his wallet.

The neighbour they quietly helped for years.

The funny story that everyone thought somebody else knew.

When we lose someone, we don’t just lose their presence. We lose the opportunity to ask questions.

So here’s a gentle thought for today:

Do you know the stories of the people you love?

Ask about their childhood.
Ask how they met their partner.
Ask about their proudest moment.
Ask what they wish more people knew about them.

Don’t wait until you’re helping someone write a eulogy.

Capture those memories now.

One day, those stories may become the most precious gift they leave behind. ❤️

✨ The power of music in a ceremony ✨

One of the most meaningful parts of any ceremony is the music… and how it connects to the person we’re remembering.

At a recent service, every piece of music told part of the story.

We entered to Morning Has Broken by Cat Stevens — a song that had also been played at his mum’s funeral. That connection felt incredibly special, almost like bringing those moments together again.

For reflection, we listened to Smile by Nat King Cole — chosen because this lovely man had a smile that would light up every room. It felt so personal, and so right.

And as we said our final goodbye, we left to Amazing Grace, played by a brass band — a perfect tribute to his love of brass music.

It all just… fitted.

And that’s what music can do. It can tell a story, create a connection, and bring comfort in a way that words sometimes can’t.

If you’re ever planning a ceremony, take time over the music. It really does make all the difference 💛
