The 1st-7th of August is World Breastfeeding Week. Whilst breastfeeding is not right for everyone, it is a wonderful way to provide baby with the needed nutrients and antibodies. The Family Practice is a safe place to breast feed and even has a dedicated feeding area for those who want a bit more privacy - please ask reception if you're not sure where to find this. Start for life is an NHS/Government funded initiative which supports families across all aspects of childhood, and provides more information about breastfeeding support; on a smaller scale Bristol City Council provides a list of support groups within Bristol. Whilst there are many benefits to breastfeeding, it is not the only way to raise a strong baby and your midwife can talk through the best alternatives with you. For anyone suffering with the emotional or physical side of postnatal life or breastfeeding specifically, we recommend reaching out to us or your midwife/health visitor for more support - it is not uncommon to suffer during this time and help is out there.

June is national men's health awareness month, bringing attention to the physical and mental health struggles men face. As a surgery, we take men's health seriously and encourage patients to reach out to us if they need support or advice. Within Bristol, there are a range of groups that focus on getting men together to talk through their problems with other men; two of these are Walking and Talking - this group organises walks across the country - and Andy's mens club - regular meetings for men to get together. The surgery offer NHS health checks for over 40s we have attached more information in the photo comments - anyone eligible can submit an online consultation to request a questionnaire and we will book in if appropriate after.

To round up National Walking Month we have put together the best staff submissions to our walking photo competition. We had joint winners for the most interesting thing found, which were the sheep tower and teddy bear picnic. Best photo went to the illuminated tree and our 2 runners up featured a beautiful rainbow and rickety bridge. We hope you had as much fun getting your steps in as we did.

We hope you're all enjoying national walking month. We have some more suggestions from the team if you're looking for inspiration. The Plantation Walk - Ashton Hill - is a favourable mention from Laura (social prescriber) where you can see some gorgeous Californian Redwood trees. Dr Baker has put forward the Painswick to Slad Walk, a family friendly hike in the Cotswolds. Chloe (reception) has recommended the Basins in Wellington, mentioning the fairy tree - her childminder told her you can make a wish by touching the tree, walking around it 3 times and then holding it's nose when making a wish. Emma (lead nurse) has found a new app called ' Go Jauntly' which you can use to do the Bristol Ring walk; a walk split into 6 smaller sections forming a large ring around Bristol. Finally, Bristol has been hosting a Walkfest this month, definitely worth checking this out.
