Dr David Garley joined on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme this morning to discuss new research exploring the association between insomnia and rising rates of cancer diagnoses in younger adults.

The study, presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology, found an association between diagnosed insomnia and increased rates of certain cancers in adults aged 18–50.

During the interview, Dr Garley discussed the importance of interpreting the findings carefully, explaining that while the research shows an association, it does not prove that insomnia directly causes cancer.

One important reminder: if you’re struggling with sleep, please don’t panic. Sleep difficulties are common and treatable, and worrying more about sleep often makes insomnia worse.

Dr David Garley joined Naga Munchetty on BBC Radio 5 live this afternoon to share practical sleep tips for coping with this extra hot spell.

If the heat is affecting your sleep, a few simple changes can make a real difference:

• Shut curtains early in the day to stop rooms overheating
• Open windows when temperatures cool to improve airflow
• Stay hydrated — warmer weather means we often need more fluids than usual
• Keep yourself cooler overnight with lighter bedding or layers
• Use a fan for air circulation, ideally pointing into the room rather than directly at you

Hot weather can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep, but small adjustments to your sleep environment can help.

Lying awake at night, dreading bedtime?

If you’re struggling to fall asleep, waking in the night, or feeling anxious about sleep, you’re not alone.

Insomnia can be exhausting - and frustratingly, the harder you try to sleep, the more difficult it often becomes.

That’s why we created our online insomnia course, built around CBTi (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia), the gold-standard, evidence-based treatment recommended for long-term insomnia.

Our course is designed to help you:

• Fall asleep faster
• Wake less during the night
• Feel less anxious about sleep
• Build long-term, sustainable sleep habits

You’ll get:

• 6 self-paced modules you can complete in your own time
• Monthly live Q&A sessions with our clinical team
• Email support throughout the course
• Practical strategies based on real sleep science — not quick fixes

Better sleep is possible.

Struggling to sleep in the heat?

As temperatures rise, many people find themselves tossing and turning at night, but there’s a genuine reason why warmer weather can make sleep harder.

Dr David Garley spoke toThe Independent about why heat disrupts sleep and the practical changes that can help.

A few of his top tips:

• Keep curtains closed during the day to stop rooms overheating
• Use a fan to improve air circulation (without it blowing directly on you)
• Swap to lighter bedding or thinner layers
• Consider going to bed slightly later when temperatures have dropped
• Try not to worry too much after a poor night — stress about sleep often makes things worse

“During warm weather, it’s common for people to have problems with falling asleep at the beginning of the night. Tossing and turning in bed and trying to manage your temperature is something that’s quite universally experienced.”

The good news is that small changes can make a real difference.

Tried all the sleep tips and still can’t sleep?

That was the position journalist Tom Ward found himself in before working with for chronic insomnia.

He’d tried the usual advice: no screens, no caffeine, meditation, melatonin and better sleep hygiene.

But chronic insomnia often isn’t solved by another sleep hack.

CBTi helps people understand what is actually keeping insomnia going, whether that’s sleep anxiety, racing thoughts, spending too much time awake in bed, or the pressure to 'try harder' to sleep.

As Tom’s piece shows, insomnia can feel endless when you’re in it, but it is treatable.

'Bedtime stacking' is the latest sleep trend doing the rounds, and it’s another good example of something that looks like self-care, but quietly undermines your sleep.

The idea is - you go to bed early, but take everything with you including your laptop, snacks, TV remote, skincare, emails etc... and work through it all before you sleep.

On the surface, it sort of seems productive, but from a sleep perspective, it’s problematic. Our brains learn through association, and one of the most important associations we try to build clinically is simply Bed = sleep.

When you start turning your bed into a place for admin, entertainment, eating, scrolling, and planning… you weaken that link, and that’s when we start to see people taking longer time to fall asleep, more night-time awakenings and that 'tired but wired' feeling the next day.

People often think sleep problems are about stress or workload, but in reality, small behavioural patterns like this can compound over time into something much bigger.

If you want a simple rule that actually works, keep your bed boring.

Most people with insomnia don’t have a 'sleep problem' in the way they think.

Over time, sleep becomes something you try to control:

- going to bed earlier
- staying in bed longer
- trying to switch off

And often, it backfires. CBTi works differently. It focuses on breaking that cycle and rebuilding a more natural pattern of sleep.

We’ve built our insomnia course around these principles, with monthly live webinars with Dr David Garley where you can ask questions and get guidance.

If sleep has become a struggle, this is where to start.

Dr David Garley recently contributed to an article in exploring snoring, sleep apnea, and the long list of 'solutions' people try to fix it.

“Like a giant straw finishing the last of a milkshake…”

That’s how one partner described their snoring.

And here’s the key point: snoring isn’t always just noise, it can be a sign of something more serious. We often see snoring as the early warning light, because when it’s linked to obstructive sleep apnea, it can mean:

- Poor quality sleep (even after 8 hours)
- Daytime fatigue and brain fog
- Increased risk of high blood pressure and heart disease

And it doesn’t just affect you, it can also have an impact on your partner’s sleep, your mood and relationships and how you feel during the day.

So, if you are:

- Snoring regularly
- Waking up tired
- Noticing pauses in breathing

…it’s worth getting checked properly, because when you treat the cause, the difference can be dramatic.

“I was an awful snorer… I was tired… I was disturbing my partner.”

Our patient Cathy shared her experience with us, and it’s one we hear all the time.

She suspected sleep apnea, booked a home sleep test, and within days had answers.

The process was simple:
Test delivered to her door → quick results → video consultation → diagnosis → treatment started.

Now?

“It’s been absolutely wonderful… it’s really worked.”

From diagnosis to treatment and ongoing support, everything was handled quickly and clearly — with follow-ups and a team there to answer any questions along the way.

If you’re snoring, constantly tired, or wondering if something isn’t right with your sleep… it might be worth looking into.

Sleep apnea is common, but it’s also very treatable.

Thanks to Cathy for sharing her story with us!

Another 5 star review!

After struggling with severe sleep apnea, our patient’s home sleep test showed an AHI of 50.8 events per hour. For context, an AHI over 30 is considered severe.

AHI (Apnoea-Hypopnoea Index) measures how many times your breathing either stops or significantly reduces per hour of sleep.

After our patient starting CPAP treatment:

- Their AHI reduced to 1–2 events per hour (now within normal range)
- Oxygen levels improved significantly
- They had no more morning headaches
- They had noticeably more energy during the day

Alongside the results, they highlighted the importance of ongoing clinical support, describing our team as professional, knowledgeable and consistently helpful throughout, to read the review in full, visit our google business profile.

If you’re experiencing fatigue, poor sleep or low energy, it may be worth exploring further with a home sleep test. We send them out free next day delivery with your results back in 2 working days or less.
