🌿 What’s Been Good?

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re sharing a powerful guest blog from Helen at Brainworks Hypnotherapy, who runs free Monday morning relaxation sessions at the Vassall Community Hub.

Over the past year, a small mindfulness group has grown into a steady, supportive space where people can take a moment to pause, reflect, and connect. Each session begins with a simple question - “What’s been good?” - helping people notice small positives, even during difficult weeks.

In her blog, Helen reflects on how the group has developed, and shares honest feedback from those who attend - from managing anxiety to finding a sense of community.

🧠Mental Health awareness week:

I find this week a bit of a strange one for me as mental health is forefront daily. It wasn’t until my husband came home the other day and said that someone they were talking to didn’t believe in mental (ill) health. Whilst I am sure it was a contextual point it irritated me and so I began to wonder why someone would be so flippant about it.

This opened up a whole world of why and how people can be dismissive or avoidant of mental (ill) health, so here are a few facts for those sceptics:

Mental Health is a term which is neutral.

👌Good Mental Health is when we can carry out our daily lives feeling calm, solution focused, perceptive, able to resolve conflict in a productive way without blame, rage or avoidance, compassionate to oneself and others.

🫤When good Mental health starts to decline we have a tendency to become easily frustrated, problem focused, easily angered or emotional, we can withdraw from engaging with others, make rash decisions, and dubious choices, our ability to focus reduces and we may start drinking, eating, smoking or taking recreational drugs more, to help us relieve the pain or uncomfortable feelings we have, this can then spiral if we don’t intervene.

😣The challenges when we are in a mental health decline are that we can struggle to see what is happening because we start to blame external sources and whilst they may have been a factor we don’t necessarily consider the impact it’s having on ourselves.

💡One thing to take note of is that we all experience things in a different way for a variety of factors, so judgement of other people’s responses can be damaging, that is why curiosity is so powerful.

🤔This year’s theme is take action, so why not get curious about the little things that bring you joy or make you smile.😊

🧠Mental wellness is a lifelong practice.

Come along and join the Hope not hate campaign! it's very much needed right now 🧡🩵

We’re incredibly excited to be joining the campaign by HOPE not hate for A Million Acts of Hope Week 💛 15th May 10am-1pm.

As part of the week, we’ll be opening a FREE pop-up café with cake by PROPS, a welcoming space for conversation, connection, and community. We’ll also be hosting the wonderful Sing for Happiness Choir to help fill the space with music, joy, and togetherness, as well as pebble painting to share your own slice of joy with the community.

At a time when the world can feel overwhelming, we believe small acts of kindness and shared moments can make everyday life a little more hopeful.

Come and grab a cake, have a chat, sing along, and be part of something positive. Hope grows when we create it together. ✨
