I see so many clients at Awaken Reflexology who experience relief from headaches following their sessions.

But why?

Do I believe it’s simply because I’ve pressed a particular reflex point and somehow switched off their headache? Surprisingly not at all!
I think there’s a much bigger picture.

⭐️ I’m fascinated by the science of stress, relaxation and the biological, chemical and hormonal changes that happen within our bodies.

👣 Here’s what we know…

When we’re stressed, our bodies release adrenaline and cortisol as part of our natural fight-or-flight response.

These hormones are essential, but ongoing stress can disrupt the way our stress-response systems function.

Stress can also:

💪🏻Increase muscle tension, particularly around the neck, shoulders and scalp which in itself can cause a headache.

😖Heighten our nervous system’s sensitivity to pain.

😴Disrupt sleep, making us more vulnerable to headaches.

🤕Influence pain-related chemical messengers, including serotonin and CGRP, which are involved in migraine pathways.

And so the stress–pain cycle continues.

But when we deeply relax, something interesting happens.

Our fight-or-flight response can begin to settle. Heart rate and breathing may slow, muscle tension can ease, and our nervous system may become less reactive.

So is it really surprising that some people experience headache relief following reflexology?

For some, particularly when stress and tension are contributing factors, I believe consistent reflexology appointments may help interrupt this cycle, offering regular opportunities for relaxation and potentially reducing headache triggers.

Not because we’re magically switching off headaches, but because we’re giving the body an opportunity to move away from a constant state of stress.

👣And the even more exciting bit is that that’s all BEFORE we begin to look at the Ancient theory or Reflexology itself, offering up a host of other therapeutic possibilities!

It’s not just about where I press. It’s about how your whole body responds.

Absolutely how I intend every client who visits Awaken Reflexology to feel 🫠 🐱

Whatever treatment you choose, your nervous system is always at the heart of what I do.

Feeling safe. Feeling comfortable. Feeling nurtured. Feeling able to completely let go.

There are so many wonderful benefits to the treatments I offer, but for me, this comes first. Because when your body doesn’t feel safe enough to soften, it’s much harder to access the deeper layers of healing.

I want you to not want your treatment to end.

I want you to feel that the time, money and trust you’ve invested in yourself was worth it. That you leave having gained something — a feeling, a shift, a different perspective… maybe even the sense that you’ve left something behind that you didn’t realise you were carrying.

Whatever brings you through my door, this is the feeling I intend to create for you.

Safe. Held. Nurtured. And deeply relaxed.

Basically… this cat. 😂

✨ A little change at the treatment room… and a little secret from me ✨

Some of you may already know that I’ve quietly started a degree 💪🏻 A student card at 39 😏 — I’m not going to share all the details just yet, but it’s something I’m incredibly excited about and something that will eventually sit very nicely alongside what I already do 👣

So, life is going to be a little busier as I divide my time between my lovely clients, my studies and, of course, home and family life.

But don’t worry — I’m not going anywhere! My working days and appointments are staying exactly the same.

It does mean that my lovely treatment room is sitting empty on the days I’m not there, so I’ve decided to share my space with someone…

The gorgeous Charlotte from ‘Serene Glow by Charlotte Aimée’ will be moving in for three days a week. Charlotte is a Tropic Ambassador and also offers the most amazing treatments — I know you’re going to absolutely love her.

It was really important to me that anyone coming into my space and the Salon felt like the right fit, and Charlotte really does. 🥰

As for what I’m studying… I’ll tell you a little more soon 😉👣

Exciting times ahead for us both! ❤️

Please have a look at Charlotte’s booking link here 👉🏻 https://bit.ly/3Vm4uGI

And for the yummy tropic products that some of you will have experienced during your treatment - Charlotte is your woman and is always happy to advise 👉🏻 https://www.tropicskincare.com/charlotteaimee

Gotta love a bargain… especially when it happens to be in your business colours too 👌💚

Gave this little beauty a good Vax this morning, and now she’s out in the sunshine drying while I get back to the study books 📖

My treatment space means so much to me, and I genuinely believe the little details matter.

My hands are the treatment. The benefits of reflexology don’t depend on a beautiful chair or a perfectly styled room — but the experience absolutely matters.

I want you to walk into my space and immediately feel that you can switch off, settle in and have some time that’s completely yours.

Because reflexology is the treatment… but creating a gorgeous, calm and welcoming space gives the whole experience that little extra edge ✨

Stress activates you.

Heart rate rises.
Muscles tense.
Stress hormones mobilise.
Your body prepares to respond.

That’s healthy.

Staying there is the problem and with stress being the modern day epidemic, a catalyst for so many diseases, too many of us are hanging around there not knowing how to get out.

Your biology needs a rhythm:

ACTIVATION → RECOVERY → ACTIVATION → RECOVERY

This is where reflexology fits beautifully.

Reflexology theory works with specific reflexes corresponding to the body’s organs, glands and systems, with the aim of supporting balance and homeostasis, clearing stuck energy and facilitating your body’s own healing.

Combined with deep rest, intentional touch and space to stop - it gives an overloaded system something it may not be getting enough of:

Planned, intentional opportunities to rest and recover.

Rest isn’t indulgent.

It’s a biological need.

My regulars will know this face 🐶 but not so much now I’m not working from home.

🎂🐾 The Birthday boy is 5 today!

Apparently the secret to looking this good at 5 is plenty of naps, treats and absolutely no stress. 😂

Maybe he’s onto something…

We could all do with slowing down, switching off and having a little more time to ourselves.

That’s exactly why I love what I do. 👣✨

I don’t really shout about the letters after my name.

But I studied hard to get them so maybe I should mention them occasionally. 😂

I am a Level 5 Clinical Reflexologist and a member of the Association of Reflexologists.

That training influences every treatment I give — how I work, how I adapt and, importantly, knowing the impact my treatments could have.

You don’t need to know all my qualifications. (They are on my website if you do)

But you should know you’re in properly trained hands.

To the SEN parents heading back to school…

I’m a SEN parent too.

And although we’ve pretty much mastered the school holidays, the thought of going back this week has my anxiety spiking.

Because actually, the last six weeks have worked for us.

Our own consistent structure that works for our family.

Predictable routines.

Less pressure.

Less of the social stuff.

Less of the school stuff.

We found our rhythm. Figured out what works and what doesn’t.

And for six weeks, I’ve been able to breathe.

Now the uniform is ready and we’re heading back into a world where I can’t control quite so much.

And I can already feel it creeping back in.

The mornings.

The anxiety.

The school clothes.

The school shoes.

The homework.

The after school upset.

The late nights unpacking the day.

And all those questions…

Will they cope?

Will they be understood?

Will this year be different?

What new challenges await us?

Because when you spend so much time anticipating what your child might need, creating the scaffolding to help them succeed and advocating for those needs, you become incredibly good at staying one step ahead.

It’s an amazing skill to develop as a parent.

But boy, does it take its toll 🤯

You’re constantly watching.

Anticipating.

Planning.

Proving.

Advocating.

Ready to firefight the next problem.

And after a while, your own nervous system gets pretty good at doing the same thing — staying alert and looking for what might need your attention next.

So as we prepare our children for the transition back to school, perhaps we need to remember…

We’re transitioning too.

The routine changes for us.

The uncertainty returns for us.

The mental load changes for us.

And our nervous system might need some support through that change too.

So this is my reminder — to myself as much as any other SEN parent reading this:

We spend an enormous amount of time helping our children regulate.

Ours deserves some attention too.
