Dharura Global Emergency Care We want to support ethical, sustainable, equal and reciprocal global emergency care.

Our work began with a Global Emergency Care partnership between the Bristol Royal Infirmary Emergency Department and Laikipia County in Kenya, built around Global Emergency Care Fellowship opportunities for health professionals, to receive formal Global Health training, then gain practical experience within an established partnership. This partnership continues to thrive, while we now support a wi

de range of hospital and community projects, and engage with the wider Global Health community to improve the provision of, and effective access to emergency care globally. Our belief is that all partnerships and fellowships should be: Ethical, Transparent, Collaborative, Safe, Reciprocal, Aligned and Credible.

It's been another busy and exciting year as Dharura
continues to expand its operations and global
partnerships. We have been delighted to expand our
board of trustees for the first time since the
organisation was founded, bringing in vital expertise
to support achieving our charitable missions.

Some key successes this year have been our rural
education program in Kenya, led by our fantastic
Kenyan facilitator team, and making a huge impact on
clinicians across northern Kenya, in order to improve
patients timely access to emergency care, alongside
the expansion of partnership opportunities within the
NHS, developing our support of partnerships in
Critical Care, Anaesthesia, Newborn care and
Infectious Diseases.

We continue to provide ongoing opportunities to our
senior NHS volunteers, so they can continue to
contribute to a global view of healthcare in the NHS,
alongside their long term career plans.
We have been delighted to diversify and expand our
fundraising operations, to allow us to put the charity
on a secure footing for the success of our long term
projects.

None of our achievements would have been possible without the commitment of long term and
dedicated volunteers. Thank you to the Trustees, members of the steering group, activity
leads and fundraisers - in the UK and in Kenya - for your engagement and sharing your
expertise.
Thank you also to the facilitators based in the UK and Kenya, from the Emergency
Departments of the Bristol Royal Infirmary, Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, Dol
Dol sub-disctrict Hospital, Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro,
Torbay Hospital in Torquay; and from the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, Lewa
Wildlife Conservancy, Borana Wildlife Conservancy and Kimanjo district hospotal.

🏔️ Climb Mount Kenya for a Cause! 🇰🇪

Are you looking for the adventure of a lifetime while making a real difference?

Join Dharura and our Kenyan partners on an unforgettable expedition to Mount Kenya, celebrating our long-standing partnership while raising vital funds to support our ongoing work in emergency care and healthcare education.

💙 Participants are asked to commit to fundraising a minimum of £2,500. This fundraising target covers all expedition costs, meaning there are no additional participation fees once the target has been achieved. Every pound raised also helps support Dharura's charitable work and our partnership with healthcare teams in Kenya.

This expedition is about much more than reaching the summit. Along the way, our team will: ✅ Deliver basic medical training to the local mountain guides who work on Mount Kenya every day. ✅ Take part in charity activities that celebrate our partnership and showcase the impact we've achieved together over the years.

🌄 The Climb We'll trek the breathtaking Chogoria Route over five days, experiencing spectacular scenery, incredible wildlife, and one of the highest success rates for reaching the summit. Our expedition is organised by our trusted friends at African Ascents, renowned for their exceptional safety record and expertise on the mountain.

Every step we take helps build stronger partnerships, healthier communities, and brighter futures.

The SIM team at Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital - NTRH - LHS Nanyuki

"At present, we have established simulation activities on three days of the week with one or two days for facilitator practice
sessions. Our new facilitators have brought new expertise to the program, particularly in obstetric care. With the support of Dr Karen Muthembwa, obstetrician at NTRH, the team has delivered 9 simulations in the maternity department with record attendance each time. The MamaNatalie simulation mannequin donated by Dharura has been put to excellent use
in the department.
There is also increased engagement from the paediatric department who now have weekly simulation sessions, as does the emergency department. Interest in simulation continues to
grow in the hospital.
Our team have broadened their simulation repertoire with facilitator and psychologist Shiela Nyanjau Karuga leading simulations on breaking bad news and bringing the important dimension of mental health presentations and considerations to our sessions."

On 27th June 2026, Nanyuki based Simulation facilitators participated team-building exercise for the first time. Everyone enthusiastically brought in positive energy where the team building brought out different strengths of the team.
Participants appreciated the leadership, noted strong teamwork and collaboration, acknowledged programme growth and learning opportunities.
Three facilitators: Dorcas Mwangi Sheila were recognized and awarded for being the most inspiring facilitators ❤️.
The exercise reaffirmed the team's commitment to simulation-based education.

We were proud to represent Dharura at the 25th International Conference on Emergency Medicine (ICEM 2026) in Hamburg, where we presented our poster titled: "Advancing Retention and Career progression in Emergency Nursing: outcomes of a global fellowship model."
The conference provided a valuable opportunity to share the early findings from our ongoing evaluation of the partnership between staff at Bristol Royal Infirmary and our colleagues in Nanyuki, Kenya.

Our preliminary investigation offers encouraging evidence that engagement in this global health partnership is having a positive impact on NHS nursing staff, contributing to improved morale, a stronger sense of purpose, reduced burnout, and enhanced retention. These findings reinforce the value of equitable international partnerships, not only for strengthening healthcare systems globally but also for supporting and sustaining the healthcare workforce at home.

This is only the beginning. Further research will explore the wider impact of the partnership on all those involved, helping us better understand how collaborative global health initiatives can benefit individuals, organisations, and the communities they serve.

We are grateful to everyone who has contributed to this work and look forward to sharing future findings.

Education has always been at the heart of our organisation.
Yet, when we look back on the journey we have shared over the years, our greatest achievement is not only measured in courses delivered or skills taught.

It is the trust, friendship, and partnership we have built with our colleagues in Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital - NTRH - LHS Nanyuki

Together, we have faced challenges, celebrated successes, learned from one another, and supported each other through both the difficult and rewarding moments.
What began as a professional collaboration has grown into something far more meaningful.

Today, we stand side by side, united by a shared vision and a common purpose: improving emergency care and creating a better future for the communities we serve.
We are proud of what we have achieved together, and even more excited about what lies ahead.

This spring has been a season of real collaboration and impact 🌿
Thanks to the incredible efforts of the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital - NTRH - LHS Nanyuki SIM facilitators, alongside the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust fellows working with Dharura, we’ve delivered specialist training to a wide range of healthcare professionals across the Laikipia region.

It’s genuinely rewarding to see how positively the teaching has been received — and even more so to witness the tangible difference it’s making for communities in Nanyuki and the surrounding areas.
Moments like these remind us why this work matters.
We’re excited to keep building on this momentum and can’t wait to see what the summer will bring ☀️
