If you have said, Meditation? It’s not of me!’, you are not alone. I had a very long list of reasons why I shouldn’t meditate, but I’m glad I eventually didn’t let them get in the way.
Here were my reasons, can you relate or do you have other ones?
1. I couldn’t relate to the way the media depicted people who meditate. They weren’t like me!
- People who do meditate are normal human beings looking for a normal human experience.
2. I have to be calm.
- Calmness comes as a result of meditating - we can access it more easily
3. I have to silence my mind! It has 26 compartments open, so how am going to do that?
- In meditation, you don’t silence your mind. You have an alternative focus that you come back to when you are distracted. You are training your attention to be present. Thoughts, feelings, distractions will always be a part of your experience.
4. Sitting cross-legged. I couldn’t sit this way for longer than 30 seconds
- You can sit on a chair, you can lie down, you can move and sway, you can even walk and meditate.
5. I thought it would take up long periods of time.
- You can choose your own length of time. It can be short, or long.
6. There is only one way to do it.
- There are many different types of meditation. You can explore them until you find your best fit.
7. It’s all a bit woo!
-It has a wide range of scientific research to back up its benefits.
8. It will change me.
- There is no need to change your personality when you meditate. Instead it can help you to access the better parts of yourself.
In fact, the meditation can help to make friends with yourself.
