Despite knowing nothing about building a business, or where this one skill would eventually lead, I took one small step at a time.
In the early days, I was experimenting with anything and everything just to stay busy, focused and moving.
I created EJ labels for shampoo bottles.
Leaflets.
Car advertising stickers.
Promotion graphics.
Lead magnets.
Videos of products I used.
Recorded myself setting up.
And some of it never made it any further than my laptop.
But what did reap dividends was the quiet determination to keep tinkering in the workshop of entrepreneurship long enough to eventually see the business really take off and sales to come through.
Looking back, every single effort had an impact.
Because whilst the EJ shampoo labels were never used, the person creating them was growing through experimentation, problem solving and finding new ways of doing things to get the results I wanted.
It became an obsession.
And somewhere along the way, I realised that whilst I was building a business, the business was building me too.
When the business dipped, I had to learn more.
When something didn’t work, I had to figure out why.
When I didn’t know how to do something, I had to find out.
Almost 9 years on, it’s funny to look back through the archives and see all these tiny, almost insignificant firsts.
Because it’s those tiny actions, repeated over and over, that eventually take you somewhere you once couldn’t even imagine.
You don’t need to know exactly where it’s going.
You just need to take the next step.
