Supporting the lives of older people has been part of the vision of St Monica Trust since it began over 100 years ago.

Our aim is to empower older people to live independently in their own communities for as long as possible. We do this through our Individual Giving Fund.

The feedback we receive from the recipients of these grants and their support workers demonstrates the importance of this work and the impact it can have on individuals' lives.

If you know someone 55+ living in Bath and North-East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire and facing a difficult time, our team might be able to help them.

Residents of John Wills House Care Home recently got together for their annual lunchtime BBQ. ๐Ÿ”

The sun was out and the garden was full of conversation, laughter, and the smell of delicious food. The afternoon was made extra special by a live performance from Rebecca, who sang a variety of popular songs. Residents, staff, and visitors all joined in, tapping their feet and singing along. ๐ŸŽถ

What a lovely way to spend a summer afternoon together, and a reminder of how much residents enjoy these get togethers throughout the year.

๐Ÿ  Whatโ€™s the difference between a retirement home and a care home? ๐Ÿ

When considering housing options later in life, many people come across the terms retirement home and care home. While both are designed for older people, they serve very different purposes. They differ in the level of support they provide, the types of care available, the level of independence they offer, their environment, facilities, and cost.

Retirement homes or villages are for people that want to keep their independence while living somewhere secure and part of a community. You have your own private apartment, manage your day-to-day life as you would in any other home, and have access to shared facilities like restaurants, gyms, and gardens.

A care home is for people whose needs can no longer be met safely at home. Residents have their own room and receive personal care and support with things like washing, dressing, and medication. Some care homes also offer nursing care for more complex health needs, or specialist dementia care.

The right choice depends on how much support you need now, and what you might need in future.

โœจ The smell of fresh homemade pasties filled the corridors of Charterhouse Care Home this week. โœจ

Residents came together for another Dave Bakes session, run fortnightly by our colleague Dave. Everyone picks a recipe, bakes it, and then enjoys tasting their treats at the end. ๐Ÿฅง๐Ÿ˜‹

This weekโ€™s batch was steak pasties and cheese and onion pasties. The freshly baked pasties were enjoyed by all and were kindly shared amongst fellow neighbours.

It is wonderful to see our Charterhouse community coming together, sharing food, conversation, and friendship. Another fantastic bake and a great example of the warm and welcoming community we are so proud of. โค๏ธ

Last week, we were delighted to welcome this year's Care Innovation Challenge semi-finalists, their mentors and the National Care Forum team to The Chocolate Quarter in Keynsham. ๐Ÿ’ก

After a tour of our retirement village, the semi-finalists, Sian, Lizzie and Ibomobo, met our resident innovators, who shared their own expertise, experiences and plenty of wise words about what really matters when it comes to innovation and care. This experience gave valuable insights to help our semi-finalists further shape their products to the needs of older people.

The afternoon brought a different kind of challenge, in the form of โ€˜elevator pitchesโ€™ with no slides allowed. Our executive team took time out of their busy schedules to hear each idea and provide direct feedback, giving the semi-finalists a rare opportunity to put their concepts in front of senior decision-makers.

At St Monica Trust, we believe the best innovations in care are shaped by the people who will actually use them. Giving our residents a voice in that process is something weโ€™re incredibly proud of.

Thereโ€™s already a real sense of momentum as we look ahead to the finals at the Care Show in October. Last yearโ€™s winners, Ellyfe, continue to go from strength to strength with their hydration monitoring platform.

We canโ€™t wait to see who will take the next step in October. We wish everyone the very best of luck for the finals! ๐Ÿ‘

โœจ Sandfordโ€™s Care and Support Team rated โ€˜purrfectโ€™ by Kiki โœจ

Sandford Station retirement village - St Monica Trust Care and Support Team has been rated โ€˜Goodโ€™ by the CQC following an assessment which ended on 12 May 2026.

In their report, the CQC said the following about residentsโ€™ experience of using the care and support service: โ€œPeople felt supported by staff who were kind and caring, respected them and provided them with good care.โ€

The โ€˜Goodโ€™ rating was achieved under a new management team led by Acting Deputy Domiciliary Care Manager, Gemma Sayer who had only been in post since March this year.

The Trustโ€™s Domiciliary Care Manager, Sharon Morris said: โ€œGemma and her team have worked incredibly hard since her appointment and it is very rewarding to see this being recognised by the CQC.โ€

โ€œNothing is ever too much for the Sandford Station Care and Support Team and they regularly go above and beyond every day, caring for our residents as if they were their own family.โ€

Some examples of this highlighted by Sharon, include Care and Support Worker, Roxie bringing in her own garden tools on her day off to tend to a residentโ€™s garden and the team stepping in after a resident was unable to find a sitter for her cat, Kiki.

โ€œUnfortunately, the care and support teamโ€™s paid visits are for humans only, so the team took turns to visit Kiki in their own time for the two weeks that her owner was in hospital.โ€

Our congratulations go to Gemma, Tracy, Magda, Wioletta, Victoria, Gloria, Ashlee, Sarah J, Steve, Bee, Emma, Helen, Jessica, Jess, Roxie, Sarah S, Violeta, Wina, Zoe and Izzy. ๐ŸŽ‰
