We all know that shutting curtains during the day will help keep your little one’s room cooler at night, and a cool bath before bedtime will help your little one’s body temperature.. But what happens when sleep is still disrupted after the heatwave has passed?

☀️ It is inevitable that sleep will be tougher while it’s hot, but what matters most for long term sleep is what you do AFTER the heatwave!☀️

While it is hot, do not be afraid to offer extra feeds or extra comfort if your little one is struggling to settle. Sleep will likely be disrupted for a few days, and it’s fine to give your little one what they need during this time.

❣️The key is getting straight back to normal as soon as the heat passes❣️

On the FIRST comfortable night after the heatwave, go right back to how you were feeding and settling before. This is so important for making sure any habits brought in during the heat do not stick around long term.

👶For example, if you were previously able to settle your little one in the cot, but during the heatwave you were feeding to sleep, go straight back to cot settling as soon as the heatwave has passed 👶

There may be some longer settlings on that first night, but if you stay consistent and stick with it for a night or two, sleep will find its way back to where it was.

✨If sleep does take a nosedive during the heatwave and you need support getting back on track, DM me ‘HEATWAVE’ and I will help you get to where you want to be!✨

Or... your holiday will be so much more enjoyable because everyone is actually sleeping well!

The key is knowing exactly how to navigate sleep when your days look different.

🌅 Evenings are longer

🏖️ Mealtimes aren’t at the same time

😎 Naps have to fit around what your day entails

😴 Bedtimes can be later

Once you know how to manage your little one’s sleep when days look different, a holiday becomes a time where you actually have the energy to enjoy it!

Days become more relaxed because you’re not second-guessing every nap and everyone feels more energised. You get to enjoy those precious first holiday moments with your little one, instead of stressing about routines.

✨When you work with me on improving your little one’s sleep, I teach you exactly how to navigate sleep when things are different. So going on holiday doesn’t have to disrupt your little one’s new sleep skills✨

Just like this family I worked with before they went on their first ever family holiday:

“Our sleep is completely transformed… And crucially holiday didn’t mess up his sleep at all. He did cot naps and slept through once we had returned.” Parents to baby O, 6 months old

If you’d like support getting your little one’s sleep sorted before your holiday, so you can actually enjoy it without the stress, DM me ‘HOLIDAY’ to start a chat today.

I’ve supported over 300 families to finally get the rest they desperately needed, with The Lullaby Sleep Method - my proven, gradual and responsive approach to making change that gets you and your little one the sleep you both desperately need.

Here’s how it works:

⭐  I start by understanding YOUR little one. Their individual sleep needs, temperament, current habits, your lifestyle and what you would like to achieve. This is critical because every baby is different, and your plan will be built solely around you and your little one.

⭐   Then I create 6 clear, tailored stages that gradually move your little one from where they are right now, to where you want them to be. I take away all of the overwhelm, and provide one clear step at a time.

⭐   You’re never on your own. You get two full weeks of unlimited support from me. I will answer all of your questions, support you through tough nights and adapt your plan as needed. This means you won’t be second-guessing yourself or googling “why won’t my baby sleep” at 3am!

But don’t just take my word for it:
“I cannot recommend Jo highly enough. Her gentle approach and extensive support helped us become a more well-rested family. It’s truly felt like magic how we were able to go from frequent night wakes, to sleeping through, with ease thanks to her guided help. My only regret is not getting in touch sooner. Thank you SO much for giving us all the rest we so desperately needed.”
Amy Mathieson - Mum to baby A, 6 months old

As of today, the sun is officially rising at 4:52am (according to timeanddate.com)! This means that your little one’s room could be gradually getting lighter and lighter from 4:52am, encouraging them to wake earlier and earlier!

🌅 If my little one was up for the day at 5am, here’s exactly what I’d do:

1️⃣ Base naps off your ideal wake up time, not the time they actually wake.

If early starts mean your whole nap schedule (and therefore bedtime!) shifts earlier, you’re reinforcing the early wake.

2️⃣ Treat 5am like 1am.

If you respond differently at 5am, your little one learns it’s morning.

Exposing your little one to light and movement (ie. getting them up!) just tells their body clock the day has started, reinforcing the wake time for future mornings.

3️⃣ Hold off on that early feed.

A 5am milk feed can encourage your little one to wake for it out of habit.

Try having a no feed zone between 4am and your acceptable wake up time, so that your little one isn’t waking for a 5am breakfast out of habit.

4️⃣ Temporarily push bedtime later.

Shifting naps and bedtime later for a couple of weeks can help shift that early morning wake. Once things settle, you can gradually bring bedtime earlier again. Shifting a morning wake up time takes time, don’t expect change within a week.

Early wakes are tough. I know just how exhausting it is when the day starts with the sunrise at 4:52am!

If you’ve tried all of the above and your little one is still waking at 5am, there’s usually another more specific reason that it’s happening, and that’s exactly what I help families to understand.

✨ DM me ‘SLEEP’ to start a chat today and let’s figure out what’s really causing it, and exactly how to make change!✨

I can’t wait to help you get your lie in’s back 💜

Let’s be real for a second… white noise is unlikely to take your little one from waking every 2 hours overnight, to sleeping through the night. I talk about how you can do that below.

However, when used in the right way, white noise does have its benefits, so firstly, lets check you’re using it correctly:

1️⃣ Does your white noise stay on all night?

It’s key to avoid white noise that turns off after 20 minutes (or other short time) after your little one has fallen asleep. If they use white noise to fall asleep at bedtime, they’ll need it to get themselves back to sleep if they wake in the night.

2️⃣ Is your white noise positioned correctly?

If using it to block out external sounds, place the white noise between baby and the source of the sound to create a barrier.

Night wakings can be caused by external sounds you may not have considered such as heating coming on, traffic building up outside, dogs barking, or birds tweeting in the early hours!

3️⃣ Is it the right volume?

The recommended limit is 60 decibels (free apps can help you test this), but I’d recommend staying much lower. You can usually achieve that by moving the white noise machine as far away from the cot as possible.

4️⃣ Does your white noise have a constant tone?

Melodies or music create a lovely environment for your bedtime routine, but once your little one goes into their cot for sleep, these should be turned off. They have an up and down tone which can be disruptive to sleep. Use one with a constant tone instead.

😴 If you’ve checked all of the above and your little one is still waking regularly… the white noise is unlikely to be addressing the real reason your little one is waking through the night.

⭐ I help exhausted families understand the exact reasons their little one is waking every 2 hours through the night, and teach them exactly how to change that in a gradual and responsive way, meaning they can stop guessing how to make change, and stop buying gimmicks that don’t address the root cause!⭐

Is your baby waking multiple times through the night?

Are you exhausted, running on empty, and struggling to find the patience and energy to enjoy your baby during the day?

Are you desperate to feel like yourself again, to have your evenings back, and to finally get a decent night’s sleep?

I hear you, and I want you to know that you are not alone.

Hi, I’m Jo, founder of Lullaby Sleep Consulting and in my experience of working with over 300 families, multiple night wakings are one of the most common challenges they face, and also one of the hardest to live with.

The impact of consistently broken nights goes way beyond tiredness. It affects your mood, your patience, your relationship, and your ability to be the parent you so desperately want to be.

But I also know that night wakings CAN be solved.

⭐I’ve recorded a short video explaining exactly how I have helped so many families go from sheer exhaustion from multiple night wakings, to longer stretches of deep, restorative sleep and finally having the energy to enjoy their baby again⭐

It’s completely FREE, and it could be the turning point you’ve been looking for.

✨ DM me ‘VIDEO’ and I’ll send it straight to your inbox. Let’s get your family the sleep you all deserve! ✨

Do these 3 things before you do anything else!

A simple tweak could be all your little one needs.

When I work with a new family, I always check the basics first, as any other changes you make will have minimal impact until you have these right!

💡 LIGHT - Is the room as dark as possible? Light signals cortisol (the awake hormone), darkness signals melatonin (the sleepy one!). Keep it as dark as possible.

🌡️ TEMPERATURE - Is the room between 16°C and 20°C? Too hot or cold disrupts sleep. A cool, consistent temperature is optimal.

💥 NOISE - Is something waking your little one up? Heating, traffic, dogs, alarm clocks, siblings? Eliminate noises or use white noise as a sound blocker placed between your little one and the source.

⭐️ Before changing anything else around sleep, nail the basics first ⭐️

If you’ve checked all 3 of these and your little one’s sleep still isn’t improving, that’s where I come in, and I’d love to help!

It’s crucial that any changes you make to your little one’s sleep are practical and sustainable for you. Otherwise they’ll be impossible to stick to and you’ll end up resorting to old habits.

One myth I hear a lot is: “You have to stay home for all naps to get your little one’s sleep right!”

For me, this is both impractical and unsustainable, and definitely not something I teach in my sleep plans!

Most families I work with appreciate flexibility, and that’s exactly what I believe in and make sure is part of all the plans I build.

✨You do not have to stay home all day or have all naps in the cot in order to improve sleep!✨

Depending on your little one’s age, I recommend one nap a day in the cot. This is enough to keep up the practice and familiarity of sleeping in the cot, which then helps your little one feel more comfortable sleeping in the cot at night.

As a rough guide:

💤 3+ naps a day - try to do one nap a day in the cot (first nap of the day is the easiest)

💤 2 naps a day - try to do one nap a day in the cot (or at least one every other day)

💤 1 nap a day - try to have a nap in the cot at least every 2-3 days to keep up the practice

This is a rough guide and will need to be tweaked based on your little one’s temperament and your own lifestyle too.
