Why strength work gets more important as you get older-
Most people think strength training is optional past thirty. We now understand the importance.
Muscle loss accelerates
After thirty, we naturally lose muscle mass each decade — faster if we’re sedentary. That loss affects everything — how you move, how you recover, how resilient your body is.
Bone density declines
Strength work is one of the most effective tools for maintaining bone density as you age. It’s not just about looking strong — it’s about staying resilient.
Injury risk goes up
A body with less muscle mass and lower bone density breaks down faster and recovers slower. Prevention through strength is far cheaper than rehab after injury.
It’s different for women
Hormonal changes — particularly around menopause — accelerate both muscle and bone loss. Women need to be even more intentional about strength work than men, especially as they get older.
The good news
You can reverse a lot of this. Consistent strength work — even two or three sessions a week — significantly slows muscle loss, supports bone health, and keeps your body resilient.
It’s not vanity. It’s longevity.
