Has modern medicine become a victim of its own success?

In this clip from Integrative Medicine Matters podcast with Dr. Elizabeth Thompson, guest Dr Sally Bramley makes an observation that stops you in your tracks. We have built one of the most sophisticated healthcare systems in human history. And yet chronic illness, burnout, anxiety and disconnection are rising faster than ever. Because somewhere along the way, we forgot the other parts. The relational. The intuitive. The whole person.

Sally sees Integrative Medicine as the space where something vital is being reclaimed. A more feminine, intuitive approach to health that does not replace the science but weaves alongside it, asking not just what is wrong but what does this person actually need?

This is the future of medicine.

What if instead of naming your illness and medicating it, we actually found out why it was there in the first place?

This is the question that drew Dr Sally Bramley to functional medicine. And as our guest in this clip from our podast 'Integrative Medicine Matters', she explains it beautifully.

As a conventionally trained doctor, Sally was already fluent in the language of modern science, mitochondria, microbiome, biochemistry. But functional medicine gave her something her training never quite had. A way of seeing the whole person. Not isolated organs. Not separate symptoms. But a living, breathing, interconnected system where everything influences everything else.

No more name it and tame it. No more managing symptoms with a prescription and moving on. Instead, a genuine curiosity about root causes and what the body is really trying to say.

This is medicine the way it was always meant to be. 💫

Did you know that the biggest source of fat in your body is probably not the fat on your plate?

In this eye opening clip from Integrative Medicine Matters, Dr Ian Lake, GP, biochemist and Type 1 diabetic, explains one of the most important and least understood facts in metabolic health.

When we eat a high carbohydrate meal, the glucose has to go somewhere. First it heads to the muscles and liver as glycogen. But here is the thing. Those stores are almost always full. So the liver does the only thing it can. It converts that excess glucose into fat. Sugar becomes fat. Under the influence of insulin.

And when we are eating three meals a day plus snacks, all loaded with carbohydrates, the liver simply cannot keep up. The result? Weight gain. High blood pressure. And fatty liver disease, a condition now affecting millions of people who have never touched a drop of alcohol in their lives.

This is not about eating fat. This is about understanding what carbohydrates are actually doing inside your body.

Everything you thought you knew about carbs is about to change. 🧬

In this fascinating clip from Integrative Medicine Matters, Dr Ian Lake, GP, biochemist and Type 1 diabetic, shares something that genuinely stops people in their tracks.

You do not need to eat carbohydrates to have enough glucose in your body. The liver is capable of producing up to 60 grams of glucose a day through a process called gluconeogenesis, converting other nutrients into exactly the fuel your body needs. The tissues that absolutely must have glucose, certain brain cells and red blood cells, are taken care of automatically. The body simply will not leave that to chance.

This changes everything about how we think about low carbohydrate eating, fasting and metabolic health. The body is not fragile. It is extraordinarily intelligent. And when we understand that, we start to make very different choices.
