Are you feeling less steady on your feet?

Falls are not always caused by simply tripping. Our balance relies on several parts of the body working together, and changes can happen gradually.

Factors that may increase the risk of falling include:

• Reduced muscle strength, particularly in the legs
• Changes in balance, coordination or mobility
• Problems with vision
• Hearing or inner-ear problems
• Dizziness or light-headedness
• Foot pain or unsuitable footwear
• Some health conditions
• Certain medicines—or a combination of medicines
• Hazards around the home, such as loose rugs or poor lighting

Regular strength and balance exercises can help us remain steadier and more confident.

Regular eye tests are important, as changes in vision can make it harder to judge distances, notice obstacles and move safely.

Hearing should also be checked if you notice any changes. Being able to hear what is happening around us supports awareness and our ability to respond. The balance organs are located within the inner ear, so some inner-ear conditions can cause dizziness or unsteadiness.

A review of your medicines with your GP or pharmacist may also be helpful, particularly if you experience dizziness or light-headedness.

How can Willow Therapy Centre help?

• Our podiatrist - Kate can assess foot pain and other foot problems that may affect the way you stand or walk.
• Our osteopaths - Serafina, Ben and Florence can look at how your body is moving and may provide appropriate exercises to help improve strength, mobility and balance.
Talking therapy with Debbie can help if a fall—or fear of falling—has affected your confidence or made you anxious about going out and staying active.

If you have fallen, feel increasingly unsteady or are worried about your balance, please speak to an appropriate healthcare professional.

Sudden loss of balance—especially with facial or arm weakness, difficulty speaking, a severe headache or changes in vision—requires urgent medical help. Call 999.

Small changes can make a meaningful difference to confidence, independence and safety.

Feeling mentally stuck?

Sometimes our thoughts can go round and round, leaving us unsure of what to do next.

Talking therapy offers a safe, confidential space where you can speak openly, without judgement. It may help you to:

• untangle difficult thoughts and feelings
• recognise patterns that may be holding you back
• see situations from a different perspective
• develop ways to cope and move forward

You don’t need to be in crisis—or even know where to begin. Sometimes, simply having the space to talk and feel heard can be an important first step.

To find out more or arrange an appointment with our talking therapist, Debbie Turner please contact Willow Therapy Centre.

Podiatrist or Chiropodist?

In the UK, “podiatrist” and “chiropodist” are legally protected professional titles. However, these days, more practitioners use the title podiatrist. A practitioner using either title must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Podiatrists don’t simply cut toenails. They are trained to examine the whole foot and lower limb, identify underlying health problems and help people remain comfortable, active and mobile.

A foot health practitioner may provide routine foot care but does not necessarily have the same degree-level clinical training or regulated professional scope as a podiatrist.

Kate Lucas is our wonderful podiatrist. She works on Fridays at the centre.

It’s just my age!

It’s something we hear surprisingly often.

Our bodies certainly change as we get older, but pain shouldn’t automatically be dismissed as an inevitable part of ageing.

There may be several factors contributing to how you feel — from joint and muscle changes to activity levels, previous injuries and general health.

Sometimes relatively simple changes to movement, activity or daily habits can help.

And sometimes further investigation or medical advice is appropriate.

Rather than assuming - I just have to put up with it - it can be worth finding out what is going on.

Pain and movement – finding the right balance

When something hurts, our natural reaction is often to stop using it.

A short period of rest can sometimes be helpful, particularly following an injury. But prolonged avoidance of movement may lead to stiffness, reduced strength and less confidence in moving.

The answer isn’t necessarily more exercise or pushing through pain.

It may be about finding the right type and amount of movement for you.

If pain is persistent, worsening or affecting your everyday life, seeking professional advice can help you understand what may be contributing to it. At Willow Therapy Centre, our practitioners will take the time to listen to you. Help you find what works for you, and provide you with a simple exercise plan.

Each time you visit they will ask you how you have got on with the exercises, and tweak or stop anything that is not helping in your recovering. When necessary they will refer you back to your doctor.
