Today is Youth Mental Health Day and this is a matter close to my heart. Sadly, many young people are struggling with their mental health in the UK. According to University College London there has been a 65% rise in mental health admissions for young people to acute wards in England over the last decade. This is a snapshot of the severity of the demand for help from children and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS). Given the lack of resources and community support, as many as 70% do not get adequate help at a sufficiently early age.

This year’s theme for YMHD is which is about helping young people to tap into their inner resources and take small steps to reach their goals whilst coping with uncertainty and the challenges of this era.

If you are a parent or carer responsible for a child or young person with a mental health problem and you feel that you need support, then I am here to help. It can be such a relief to offload your worries to another parent who knows where you’re coming from and what you’re going through. 💚

I provide professional counselling and hypnotherapy for children aged 11+ years, young people and adults (in-person and online). Enhanced DBS.

Depression is a common mental health problem and one that presents itself frequently in my counselling work. In my most recent blogpost I discuss when it would be a good time to seek help from a therapist such as a counsellor.

You can read my blogpost (3-minute read)at: https://www.tracydanielstherapies.co.uk/blog

Sadly, many people try to soldier on and cope with the symptoms of depression, which they often don’t recognise within themselves, for far too long. I would always prefer that you seek help in the early stages of depression before it becomes so entrenched that you find yourself experiencing more severe symptoms and taking much longer to recover. There are no medals to be won for battling depression on your own.

I hope you find my blogpost helpful. Get in touch if you would like to arrange a free, no obligation initial consultation.

In my work as a placement counsellor within the NHS at a busy surgery where I have been based for several months, I have the opportunity to work with patients with a wide range of problems and health conditions. Most common of which are low mood, depression, anxiety, and stress.

My experience as a clinical hypnotherapist over the past eleven years has been useful, but my additional qualifications in counselling and psychotherapy have made all the difference. I use approved skills and treatment protocols, assess each patient, measure their progress, and demonstrate successful outcomes. It’s work that is interesting and rewarding because most patients report an improvement in their symptoms. For me this work isn’t about financial reward. Being able to make a difference to a person’s life is what really matters. 💚

Currently, waiting times for counselling within the NHS are approximately 6 – 12 months. If you would like to get ahead with counselling privately (either in-person or online) then you can book a free, no obligation, initial consultation with me. If finances are an issue for you, then please contact me directly and we can come to an arrangement. I offer low-cost counselling for people in genuine need. 🌸

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day and the purpose of this is to raise awareness about su***de prevention amongst the public so that any of us can play a part in preventing another person from taking their own life. The theme this year is to change the narrative about su***de and to start talking about it.

Sadly, there is a social stigma attached to su***de and for many people it’s a taboo subject despite the fact that suicidal thoughts (suicidal ideation) are not uncommon. Having completed training in suicidal awareness, over the past year I have supported four clients/patients who were experiencing suicidal ideation including two people who needed help to access medical intervention in a crisis situation.

If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and you feel that you might harm yourself then seek urgent help by contacting your GP, phoning the NHS out of hours number 111 or go to your local Accident & Emergency centre. Also, you could reach out for support from the Samaritans (Call 116 123) or speak to a qualified counsellor who is trained in suicidal awareness.

Experiencing suicidal thoughts or thoughts about self-harm is a sign of severe emotional distress. Don’t feel ashamed to reach out and ask for help. 💚

***dePreventionDay

To anyone affected by su***de, whether you’re missing someone you’ve lost, struggling with suicidal thoughts yourself or supporting someone who is going through it right now – we’re thinking of you this World Su***de Prevention Day.

Just a reminder that if you find World Su***de Prevention Day hard, for any reason, it really is OK to switch off from social media tomorrow. Take care of yourselves 💚

We’re always here to talk on 116 123 📱

In addition to hypnotherapy, I now provide a person-centred and integrated counselling service. I work with adults, young people, and children aged 11+ and I offer a warm, compassionate, inclusive, and neuro-affirming practice. 🌿

Recently, a client who has been seeing me for counselling kindly provided me with this testimonial. It’s great to be in a position to help clients deal with problems at a deeper level, to really get to the heart of the matter, and the underlying issues that are contributing to their anxiety.

Working with this client we explored their presenting problem, which was relationship difficulties, the reason for those difficulties and how the client could regulate their own emotions in order to communicate more effectively with their partner about their needs and expectations for the relationship. Over the course of three months the client made changes to how they think about things and I introduced some psychological tools to assist with that process. They found they were able to approach problems in a much calmer way and get back to feeling much more like themselves – in control of their emotions. 💚

We are a neurodivergent household so last night I watched the controversial documentary on Channel 4 titled ‘The Great ADHD Myth?’ I like to keep an open mind when listening to other people’s point of view, weigh things up carefully and reach my own conclusion. In this instance, I agree entirely with the statement made by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (below).

The documentary was entirely one-sided and biased. It did not present a counterargument to the points raised by Max Pemberton and his colleagues. Moreover, the case study in the programme, a ten-year-old boy, needed to go back onto his ADHD medication after the documentary was made, thus undermining the premise that ADHD is a social construct and not a medical condition for which medication is helpful for some children and adults.

No, it’s not a mathematical puzzle! It’s what happened when a client began working with me 6 weeks ago. During our first session my client scaled her mood as being 2 out of 10. She was feeling low and lacking in motivation to do anything. 😔

Five sessions later and the client’s mood had improved to 9 out of 10 and remained there by the sixth session which she decided would be her final one. My door is always open if she wishes to return. Having rediscovered her motivation and ability to enjoy life again, I am confident that my client will be able to manage her mood more effectively in the future. I worked with her by providing psychoeducation and ensuring that she has some psychological tools to maintain good mental health. 🌿

This was achieved by using my skills and knowledge as a person-centred and integrative therapeutic counsellor. If you would like to find out more about how I could help you cope with low mood then just get in touch.
