An Ode to Dave
I’m Dave.
I began my working life surrounded by steel, targets, deadlines and people who generally considered discussing their feelings an unnecessary delay before lunch.
Then cancer arrived.
Uninvited, inconvenient and without so much as checking my diary.
It changed the direction of my life.
I discovered that behind every brave face there is a human story—and sometimes the greatest kindness we can offer is to sit down, put the kettle on and genuinely listen.
So that became my work.
I have spent nearly twenty years sitting alongside people during some of life’s hardest chapters.
People facing cancer.
People learning to live with loss.
Couples trying to find one another again.
People carrying anxiety, regret, anger or a quiet sadness they cannot quite explain.
And counsellors who occasionally need reminding that they are human too.
I don’t believe people are broken.
I believe we sometimes become lost beneath everything we have carried, survived and tried to manage alone.
My job is not to hand you all the answers.
It is to help you slow things down, understand what is happening and find the choices that still belong to you.
There may be tears.
There may be difficult conversations.
There will almost certainly be the occasional badly timed joke.
But there will also be honesty, warmth, challenge, hope and someone firmly in your corner.
I’m still the same ordinary bloke who loves West Bromwich Albion, country music, a proper conversation and helping people discover that their story is not finished.
I’m Dave.
And if life has become heavier than you expected, perhaps we should talk.
