Small Talk Counselling Services

Small Talk Counselling Services Life can sometimes be so complex and difficult that we do not always feel able to sort it out and get back to feeling "normal again".

Working in my current work environments I understand how the demands of daily life and major life events such as a Bereavement, Domestic Violence, Physical/Sexual abuse, or divorce can leave us feeling overwhelmed, confused or even just sad. I also have experience of supporting Family affected by MND, and emotional support around the journey they will be going through. My role as your Counsellor i

s to help you to explore the feelings and emotions that are often related to your current/past life experiences. I offer you the opportunity to reflect on what is happening in your world and for me to support you therapeutically to explore alternative ways of copings and dealing with emotive issues, that impact negatively on your life and to family and friends that are dear to you.

An Ode to Dave

I’m Dave.

I began my working life surrounded by steel, targets, deadlines and people who generally considered discussing their feelings an unnecessary delay before lunch.

Then cancer arrived.

Uninvited, inconvenient and without so much as checking my diary.

It changed the direction of my life.

I discovered that behind every brave face there is a human story—and sometimes the greatest kindness we can offer is to sit down, put the kettle on and genuinely listen.

So that became my work.

I have spent nearly twenty years sitting alongside people during some of life’s hardest chapters.

People facing cancer.

People learning to live with loss.

Couples trying to find one another again.

People carrying anxiety, regret, anger or a quiet sadness they cannot quite explain.

And counsellors who occasionally need reminding that they are human too.

I don’t believe people are broken.

I believe we sometimes become lost beneath everything we have carried, survived and tried to manage alone.

My job is not to hand you all the answers.

It is to help you slow things down, understand what is happening and find the choices that still belong to you.

There may be tears.

There may be difficult conversations.

There will almost certainly be the occasional badly timed joke.

But there will also be honesty, warmth, challenge, hope and someone firmly in your corner.

I’m still the same ordinary bloke who loves West Bromwich Albion, country music, a proper conversation and helping people discover that their story is not finished.

I’m Dave.

And if life has become heavier than you expected, perhaps we should talk.

💚 Cancer Changes More Than Your Health

A cancer diagnosis can turn life upside down—for the person diagnosed and for those who love them.

There may be fear, anger, uncertainty, changes in relationships and endless well-meaning advice from people who insist you must “stay positive.”

Sometimes you don’t need another brave face. You simply need somewhere safe to be honest.

Having faced cancer myself and supported many people affected by it, I understand that counselling cannot remove the diagnosis—but it can help you carry what comes with it.

I offer warm, straightforward counselling for:

🌿 People living with or recovering from cancer
🌿 Partners, relatives and carers
🌿 Fear of recurrence and health anxiety
🌿 Loss, grief and life after treatment
🌿 Online or face-to-face appointments

No judgement. No pressure to pretend you’re fine. And absolutely no inspirational fridge magnets required.
