In dogs with ruptured cranial cruciate ligament, is TPLO superior to TTA in reducing postoperative radiographic osteoarthritis?

Based on the relevant papers there is minimal evidence to conclude that tibial plateau levelling osteotomy (TPLO) or tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) reduces the rate of postoperative osteoarthritis progression for dogs treated for naturally occurring cranial cruciate ligament rupture. Further research with stronger study design is required to ascertain the superiority of either method.

Interesting new research study looking at how Laser Therapy (PBM) can link to behaviour.

I always encourage critical thinking, but as someone whose job involves working dogs, there is always a behaviour element to consider.

🐕WHY IT'S NOT HEALTHY FOR YOUR DOG TO BE CONTINOUSLY PANTING IN HOT WEATHER!🔥🐕

A few weeks ago we posted this graphic and we got a fair amount fo push-back from people saying...

"……DON'T YOU KNOW THAT'S HOW DOGS COOL THEMSELVES"

🔥So, yes, it's true DOGS DO PANT TO COOL themselves. But this is when their normal ability to keep their body temperature stable has been over-whelmed! So they can pant for short periods but they should not be doing it for extended periods of time. WHY?

🔥CONSTANT OR PROLONGED PANTING in hot weather is a warning sign in dogs. It means their primary cooling system is working overtime and may soon be overwhelmed.

🐕Unlike CATS (which rely more on behaviour and grooming), dogs depend heavily on panting as their main way to thermoregulate when ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURES exceed ~33-35°C (varies between breeds/individuals).

🐕Obese dogs, large dogs, brachycephalic breeds, dogs with underlying health conditions AND dogs with DOUBLE or THICK or UN-GROOMED coats will tend to start panting at lower temperatures!

🐕Panting is energetically costly. Panting requires rapid, shallow breathing (often 300–400 breaths per minute). This burns extra energy and generates more metabolic heat, creating a vicious cycle if the dog can't cool down effectively.

🐕Heavy and prolonged panting causes rapid fluid loss. Dehydrated dogs pant even harder and cool even less effectively, progressing toward heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

🐕Continuous heavy panting increases heart rate and respiratory effort. In extreme cases, it can lead to respiratory alkalosis (disrupted blood pH from blowing off too much CO₂), muscle fatigue, and reduced oxygen delivery.

Spaniel for rehoming, ideal gundog 🐶

Here’s what his owner says:

“Tentatively to go ONLY to a countryside (ie like my lifestyle and living arrangements) working (must go beating/picking up at least weekly through winter) home

That has previous experience with spicy super spaniels and can offer him MORE than I can here from a time perspective and working opportunities in winter

A home which is varied and regular fun gundog or detection style training and plentiful off lead walks and hunting spanielly fun

He is lovely to watch hunt - has been heard to make a small noise when casting off in the past but not for months now - he is by no means ready for field trials or even tests at this point - but he could be that dog for someone that wants to take time and enjoy the process

If the right home can’t offer more than me - then the right home is he stays with me

He is 12 months old, entire - with a lovely pedigree
He has been hip and elbow scored by me to make sure his testicles warrant keeping on… which they do!

He is out of eye and dna tested mum and dad but I haven’t done these yet on him - I will if he stays much longer

This dog is definitely not free.

And offers of homes will be viewed, vetted and scrutinised like I’m selling you my actual child!

Things have been so busy, and I’m so terrible at remembering to do anything with Facebook!

This is Nyx - an older lady these days, and her vet has diagnosed some possible nerve impingement in her back.

An intensive course of laser has turned Nyx into a new woman! Her treatment was carried out by Holly, who is a qualified human physio working her way through a Veterinary Physiotherapy masters - Nyx reports she’s done a brilliant job!

Holly will soon striking out on her animal physio journey, and will be available for appointments for dogs (and possibly horses) in the Worcester area. (If anyone wants more info, I can connect you)
