Frozen Shoulder: Understanding Adhesive Capsulitis
Frozen shoulder, medically known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterised by pain and progressive stiffness in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and can significantly impact your ability to perform everyday activities like dressing, reaching overhead, or fastening a seatbelt.
Common Symptoms
- Gradual onset of shoulder pain
- Progressive stiffness and loss of movement
- Reduced range of motion in all directions
- Difficulty with daily tasks
- Pain that may intensify at night or with certain movements
The Three Stages of Frozen Shoulder
Understanding which stage you're in can help you manage your recovery more effectively.
Stage 1: The Freezing Stage (2-3 months)Pain is the primary concern during this stage. You may experience a gradual onset of shoulder discomfort that worsens over time. As inflammation develops, stiffness begins to increase alongside the pain, making movement progressively more uncomfortable.
Stage 2: The Frozen Stage (4-12 months)
Pain may plateau or slightly decrease, but stiffness becomes the main limitation. During this stage, your shoulder has the most restricted range of motion. Everyday activities remain challenging, though the intensity of pain may lessen.
Stage 3: The Thawing/Recovery Stage (5-26 months)
Stiffness gradually improves as your shoulder begins to regain movement and flexibility. Pain continues to decrease. With appropriate physiotherapy and consistent practice, most people experience significant improvements in this phase.
