Pilates
Taught By Lucy Scott
Pilates is essentially a mind body centering technique that emphasises the importance of beginning movement from a central core of stability. From this central core, the Pilates method woks by adjusting the intensity of each exercise through the use of differing limb movements and resistance (using pilates equipment). Lucy previously worked in the NHS for 13 years as a

n Occupational Therapist, many of those years as a Macmillan Occupational Therapist. She then retrained as a Pilates instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. Lucy's previous career has given her a good understanding of the human body, and mind. Through her previous career Lucy developed excellent skills in observation which she now applies in her Pilates teaching to ensure all my clients are getting the most from the classes.

Early morning class today. Starting your day with Pilates is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Gentle movement wakes up your muscles, improves circulation, eases stiffness and helps you move more freely throughout the day. Combined with mindful breathing, it can also help clear your mind, reduce stress and leave you feeling calm, focused and ready for whatever the day brings

“Pilates is all about strengthening your core.”

It’s something we hear all the time… but the latest research suggests that’s only part of the story.

Modern Pilates research is shifting away from seeing Pilates as simply “core training”. Instead, it highlights improvements in movement control, body awareness, coordination and postural control.

In other words, Pilates isn’t just about building stronger muscles – it’s about helping your body move more efficiently and confidently.

Yes, a stronger core is important, but what’s even more valuable is learning how your whole body works together. When movement becomes more coordinated, everyday activities like walking, lifting, reaching and bending can feel easier and more natural.

This is one of the reasons I love teaching Pilates. It’s not about chasing the perfect plank or the strongest abdominal muscles. It’s about helping people move with greater ease, confidence and comfort in everyday life.

✨ Strength is important, but so is learning to move well.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve worked with a couple of wonderful clients who experience significant anxiety.

There is growing research to suggest that Pilates can help reduce anxiety and improve overall wellbeing. The combination of mindful movement, controlled breathing and gentle exercise may help calm the nervous system, leaving you feeling more grounded and relaxed.

If you’re feeling anxious about coming along, please know that you won’t be judged or expected to be “good” at Pilates. My job is to help you feel safe, supported and comfortable. We go at your pace, and there’s always room to rest or adapt an exercise if you need to.

Sometimes, the hardest part is simply walking through the door. After that, we’ll take it one breath and one movement at a time.

Your hips and pelvic floor work as a team. The muscles around your hips attach close to the pelvis and help provide stability and support, so when your hips are stiff, weak, or carrying extra tension, your pelvic floor can be affected too. Improving hip mobility and strength can help your pelvic floor work more efficiently, reducing unnecessary tension and supporting better movement, balance, and comfort.

One of last week’s one-to-one sessions was with a lady who is studying for her PhD while also working with clients. Like many people, she spends much of her day sitting at a desk.

Although she already goes to the gym and keeps herself active, she was still experiencing pain in the left side of her lower back after long periods of sitting. It was a great reminder that being active doesn’t always counteract the effects of spending hours in one position.

She came to Pilates wanting to learn how to engage her deep core muscles more effectively and hoped it might help reduce her back discomfort.

During our session, we worked through the Pilates fundamentals, focusing on breathing, alignment and deep core activation. She also left with a personalised video to remind her of the exercises we covered, so she can practise confidently at home.

I’m delighted she’ll be joining my Monday evening class this week, where we’ll continue building on those foundations.

Every body is different, and sometimes a few small changes in how we move can make a real difference to how we feel.

If you’ve been struggling with aches and pains from sitting all day, Pilates could help. Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to find out more about one-to-one sessions or my small classes.

Research supports what many Pilates instructors and clients see every day. A 2023 systematic review found that Pilates can have positive effects on pain, physical function, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life in women.

Will Pilates cure you overnight? No.

Will there be days when symptoms flare up or progress feels slow? Almost certainly.

But time and again, I see people who stick with it begin to move more freely, feel stronger, and feel more confident in their bodies.

You don’t need to push yourself to exhaustion or perform advanced exercises. Often, the greatest benefits come from regular, consistent practice and an approach that meets you where you are.

Progress isn’t always a straight line, but every small step counts.

While much of the Pilates industry debates what is and isn’t the “best” form of Pilates, my advice is simple: find an instructor who understands your body, knows their craft, and makes you look forward to coming to class.

The best Pilates is the Pilates that is safe, effective, enjoyable, and keeps you coming back.
